Summer camp reviews

by Ginger Harris » Mon Mar 22, 2010 4:39 pm

I am looking for day camps for my kids this summer, and am looking for parent reviews. I am particularly interested in the Science Center, Frazier, Walden Theater, Shakespeare, and Speed Museum. Which did your kids like, which did they complain about?

Thanks.

I think Steve P was starting a summer camp for incorrigible youth.
The tall one wants white toast, dry, with nothin' on it.
And the short one wants four whole fried chickens, and a Coke.

well, mostly for a 7 and 10 year old. I was also thinking about the Globe Players for a teenager.

Ginger,

My daughter did Walden Theatre when she was 8-10 several summers and greatly enjoyed it. She has multiple friends who do it every year- it has a great reputation and the kids seem to really enjoy it. Not sure about it for Teens though. She also really liked the programs at the Zoo ( but that was mostly when she was younger than yours).

A program that you didn't mention is the JCC ( Jewish Community Center) which has an excellent summer program including two campuses- their main location on Dutchman's and at KCD on the East End. ( You don't have to be Jewish, in fact I believe most of the kids in the program are not Jewish) Sara went there many years from 5-12 and also hugely enjoyed the program, until she got to be a teen and didn't want to be in a program anymore. For your kids ages, the regular program does alot of day-trips visiting places ( Caves, Kentucky Kingdom, Water park, Science Center) ; they also have a large pool so there is a lot of swimming. They also offer "specialty'' classes like theatre, sports, etc.

I don't think KCD is a campus for JCC camps anymore. We've been going to school @ KCD and doing summer camps since 2008, and it's not been affiliated with the JCC during that time.
That being said - they do have a good summer program that is open to all students - you don't have to be a student at KCD to sign up. Info at KCD.org.

We had friends that loved the Frazier camps last summer. We tried to make one of those work and the options didn't fit well in our schedule. We've also liked the zoo camps, but agree with Deb Hall that they are geared for younger children. We're trying a Speed Art camp this summer as well.

Good luck with your search!
