Family travel suggestions

by Becky M » Wed Mar 17, 2010 3:42 pm

we have spring break coming up over here in Indiana next week. I am wanting to go away with the kids for a couple of days, but i am drawing a blank.

I was thinking of the cincy zoo, but a part of me thinks that it will be too cold for that. Anything within a two hour radius would be ok. I am just drawing a complete blank............

How about Mammoth Cave? Also near is the amusement park with an Australia theme.

Ill second Nancy's suggestion. I think Mammoth would be a great idea. There a number of interesting things to see in the area.
The tall one wants white toast, dry, with nothin' on it.
And the short one wants four whole fried chickens, and a Coke.

Becky, much as I have enjoyed Mammoth Cave with my children and grandchildren, I wouldn't do it with a two-year old if you paid me. I'd wait two or three years to do that one. The Australian theme park is mainly an outdoor venue that would be as likely to be as wet and cold as the Cincinnati Zoo and more costly.

I actually don't think it'll be too cold. Here in Indianapolis, we've had 65 degree weather! That's perfect for a zoo trip! I hope you plan to take the wife out for dinner after all of that, too. It's so important to date your spouse after kiddos. There's a restaurant in Indy that I know they have in Cincinnati, too. Have you been to Stone Creek? You should treat the wife to Cincinnatti Dining at it's best! A after the zoo of course!

Thanks for all the suggestions. I am going to look them up online.

Gayle i had the same feeling about mammoth cave. I think it is too strenuous for the babies, 2.5 and 1; might also be dangerous for them in some parts.

We have been to the childrens museum many times, i was trying to find something different. But they do have bob the builder theme right now, so that is an option.

I took my daughter to Mammoth Cave when she was 2. It wasn't dangerous in the least! You just have to go on one of the less-strenuous tours.

Then again, eldest has been to three countries and 35 states, so we may be a wee bit more used to travelling than most.

Becky,

We loved both Indy and Cincy for 3 day trips with little ones. There is a cool Holiday Inn outside Cincy ( Northern KY) that has an indoor pool that's like a jungle and also theme hotel rooms. We did that for Spring Break one year when we didn't leave town- for a little bit of heat .We stay in the regular rooms as the theme rooms are very pricey, but it was still fun. And if you are willing to spend more, the Great Wolf Lodge in Cincy is wonderful! The rooms are pricey but you can comfortably fit a family of 5-6 in some of them and it includes unlimited indoor waterpark tickets for your group while you are there. We go up early, stay one night and you can still use the waterpark the day after you check out on the second day. Personally, I'd stay somewhere cheaper a second night. I recommend eating elsewhere though; the one restaurant is expensive for a family. If you go to Cincy, don't forget the Newport Aquarium- inside and great for all ages.

thanks for all the suggestions and information everyone. We ended up going to Cincy, enjoyed the zoo there. It was really nice weather, and most of the animals were out. Except for the construction, the zoo was very enjoyable. The kids enjoyed the pool at the hotel, the babies really enjoyed it and the girls liked having the whole pool to themselves. We ate on the cheap, I was innovative.....

i am making a little list of the places that were suggested so that we can check those out in the upcoming months. With four kids, two of them 1 and 2 yr olds these little two day trips are ideal for us.

Deb do you know the name of the hotel that has the jungle-like pool? i have been checking out Great Wolf Lodge, but i think i need to wait a couple of years, i dont think the boys are ready for a waterpark like that yet.

Yep, that's it. :D

The specialty rooms must attract an adult crowd, but when we were there, the main hotel was full of families who came there for the pool. ( personally if I was there on an adult-trip I'd avoid the pool/main hotel like the plague. )

Becky- only caution is I don't remember if they have a baby-pool. Holiday Inn Holidome Hotels are also usually a good bet, particularly if you find one with a baby pool, they have large indoor pools and game rooms for your older two.
