Family travel suggestions

by Becky M » Wed Mar 17, 2010 3:40 pm

we have spring break coming up over here in Indiana next week. I am wanting to go away with the kids for a couple of days, but i am drawing a blank.

I was thinking of the cincy zoo, but a part of me thinks that it will be too cold for that. Anything within a two hour radius would be ok. I am just drawing a complete blank............

Becky, how about Indianapolis and, specifically, the Children's Museum in Indianapolis? It's a little less than two hours away. http://www.childrensmuseum.org/ My children enjoyed it when they were little; my grandchildren are enjoying now.

If you are staying more than one day, also consider the Indianapolis Museum of Art (This one has free admission!) http://dashboard.imamuseum.org/, the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art http://www.eiteljorg.org/ and/or the Indiana State Museum. http://www.indianamuseum.org/

Don't bother with the Indianapolis zoo. In my opinion, both the Cincinnati and Louisville zoos are much better.

Gayle, thanks for the suggestions. We have been to the childrens museum quite a few times. Just trying to think of some different places to go than the usual. I am going to check out the other links you posted, hopefully they will be appropriate for my 2 yr old.

Well. Becky, thinking of that two-year old. There is a small children's museum in Lexington called the Explorium of Lexington, http://www.explorium.com/It's nothing like the one in Indianapolis, but it's great for a two year old. Lexington also has the horse park which is super in my grandkids minds. http://www.kyhorsepark.com/

Also, the exhibit "Dinosaurs: The Big Picture" at the Community Arts Center in Danville http://www.communityartscenter.net/dino has been extended through March 26, 2010. My son and daughter-in-law took my four grandchildren (ages 4-11) last month and thought it was quite nicely done.

Grey Wolf Indoor water park in cincy may be worth a trip. They have splash area for little people, as well as rides for pretty much all sizes of kids. Bardstown train-- sometimes has kid specific trips. I'm sure you may have already done science museum here, but Tut exhibit is opening soon. Have fun, regardless!

If you do decide to do the Cincinnati zoo & gardens, you could also do the aquarium (I suggest buying your tickets ahead of time). Also, if your kids are into video games, there's a big arcade type restuarant in the Levy in Newport, right next to the aquarium. There is also the Cincinnati Museum Center in the old Union Station. It has several museums inside, as well as am IMAX theatre. Plenty to do there if the weather is a no-go. I have also heard great things about Great Wolf Lodge. How old are the kiddos? That could help narrow it down.

I looked into the Great Wold Water Park, though it looks cool it is wayyyy out of our price league. It starts at $300 a night, for a couple days i would be way over my budget.

We have also been to the museum at Union Station and everyone loved it.

Gayle the museum in Lexington looks really great, i am keeping that one in mind to go this summer.

I was throwing these ideas at my daughters and they suggested that they want to go to Cincy. There is this hotel that we go to and they kind of want to keep the tradition up. So, we are definitely going to Cincy, but dont know where yet. Hopefully, the weather stays nice and we can do the zoo.

The kids are 2.5 and 1, and the older ones are 12 and 14. And actually, my girls are really good, not picky about doing things or selfish. Like i said they said they would be happy with just going to the hotel and hanging out in the pool.... :D :D :D
