Window Installation

by Beth K. » Thu Feb 11, 2010 12:50 pm

We're looking at having 14 windows replaced. I don't know if we're up for the task ourselves, but we could be if it would save us a great deal of money.

Has anyone ever installed windows on your home? What type of time committment is it? Do you wish you had just had them professionally installed?

Has anyone ever had windows professionally installed? If so, how much did the installation run per window? Also, if anyone has any companies that they would like to recommend, that would be great.

Thanks!

I used Window World here in Louisville this past Fall and was very pleased. I had two recommendations from friends for them and they too are happy with the replacements I replaced all my 60 year old windows, with hideous aluminum storm windows on some...impossible to open or keep open once opened, typical old 1950 wood frame windows...it ran about $220 each, and I can really notice the difference in draftiness this winter. They did my house in two days, but probably could have done it in one if there were a bigger crew (two guys did mine). It is hard hard work pulling out the old windows. Unless you are very athletic and comfortable standing on a ladder and yanking with all your might I'd hire someone. The new ones seemed to pop in quite easily, I was suprised by that. But it's important to have them measured correctly. My salesperson was Randy Milby, he did a nice low pressure sales job, didn't try and upgrade me to something I didn't want or need. I also had a storm door on the front door replaced and I'm happy with that too. I was in window replacement limbo for years, you get on the internet and there is so much info and so many people complaining, I was glad I finally just jumped and did it. Now if it will just warm up so I can open these babies up!

Thanks Mary Anne! I'll add them to the list. I guess replacing windows is not very common. We have aluminum windows from the 1950's and they have got to go! We're waiting for warmer weather before we make our move.

Our windows are also the crappy aluminum kind. They're impossible to open, and therefore, clean. We'll probably end up having ours replaced.

It's been a number of years since we put a lot of new windows in this old Crescent Hill bungalow, but we were very happy with Garrett's Aluminum, an honest and reliable company in a field where there's an awful lot of sleaze. That said, I imagine Mr. Garrett has retired by now, but at the time he was training his son to take over the family business. Although the windows are in fact aluminum, they're apparently good quality. They keep the house warmer, and they're still easy to get up and down.

Ours are original to our house, and they are complete junk. I can't wait to replace them...

MIchele you will be astounded at how much light comes in when you get rid of the crappy windows. Partially because I couldn't clean them properly, partially because they were 50+ years old, but the new windows have let so much more light in it is amazing. I am actually looking forward to warm weather so I can pop these babies in and out and clean them from the inside! And have functional screens! And be able to raise and lower the windows without a crowbar!! :D

The design of our windows just wasn't very well thought out. We literally can't get in between the windows to clean them, and we've lived there for a long time. They're disgusting. As soon as it gets warm enough to tolerate having big holes in our house, we'll be getting them replaced, along with getting our privacy fence replaced, and getting a concrete patio poured. Gonna be a busy Spring.

Your windows sound very much like my old windows. I had cobwebs between the storm window and the window window that were absolutely disgusting, full of dead bugs and icky, blech stuff... You will love the new windows!
