Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom to close

Since 1997, Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom has welcomed tourists from Kentuckiana and around the country for family fun at the park. After 13 years of service under the Six Flags umbrella, park officials released a statement late Thursday that it will shut down because it could not come to an agreement with the Kentucky State Board on its lease.

I have mixed feelings about this. It's definitely not good as far as people being out of work though.

Hope they can save the park (and its jobs), but I haven't visited KK in a dozen years or more - just not top of mind for things to do around here.

Thunder Run was showing its wear and was no longer fun, during the ride nor after... And then you could no longer get into KK free during the fair. Now they've taken away Chang. I also liked it before Six Flags took it over.

I also liked the Starchaser, but then there was the girl that got hurt...her car was actually a few ahead of us on the ride! The park has had its share of lawsuits.

I haven't been for a while but I do hate the loss for the kids in the community. Once upon a time I bought season tickets for my daughter (then in her teens) and she could hang out there with her buds during the day at the swim park. I'd much rather she be there with their security system than just running out and about.

One more post about this...
I'm wondering since Louisville is a city primarily of families (ask anyone that's single in town) why is it we have such a hard time supporting recreational facilities like this? There doesn't seem to be that much around town to amuse the kids. Or am I just too far from the situation anymore?
We have 1 ice rink, maybe 2 roller rinks, Lazer Blaze, the zoo, a bunch of putt-putt places, the assorted swimming pools and what else? (I'm talking about for teens, not the Chuck E Cheese crowd.)

A huge loss for the community, not just for family fun, but also because of the water park. Public swimming facilities in this city are pitiful, and even though KK's entry fee was expensive, the water park was a fun, different type of place to go on a hot summer's day. I wonder if someone will take over just that part of the park?

I must admit that I prefer the atmosphere of Holiday World to that of Kentucky Kingdom (KK), even if it's in Indiana. :( It would be nice if the water park stayed here & the Kentucky State Fair grew to be large enough to fill the vacant lot that might come from KK closing.

THAT'S a very good idea if they could get them to do it. Holiday World's business plan went from dismal (in the the 70s and 80s) to outstanding by 2000. I think it was remarkable what they did with that little park.

I basically work across the street from KK and I don't hardly ever remember seeing any rides in operation this past summer. I do remember seeing a lot of people walking to the water park from outside so they didn't have to pay the criminal amount of $6.00 to park.
A side note...I absolutely hate to pay to park. If I'm going to the fair grounds for anything, unless it's freezing out, I rather walk a little further by parking at CB Young than paying the Fair Board. I don't get stuck sitting in Ring Road traffic either.

Besides all the bad things listed from the closing - Kentucky Kingdom signed on as a sponsor for a large Boy Scout fundraiser this year. They offered $10.00 off admission for the Camp Card discount card. This has been a part of Camp Card sales for years and one of the biggest selling points of the card. I truely believe that they intended to close all along - sending a proposal in a 4 line email and expecting a definitive answer from it is not a good business practice. A lot of troops use the money to send their youth to summer camp and this will cut into sales. THANKS Six Flags for screwing the Boy Scouts along with the rest of the community!!
