Need input in selecting DVD player for senior, senior citizen

by Gayle DeM » Sat Dec 12, 2009 5:32 pm

For Christmas, I would like to by my 93 yr. old aunt a DVD player to hook up to her TV. (Or would it be wiser to buy her a portable DVD player?) My aunt is still very sharp mentally, but her only experiences with modern technology have been her digital tv and a microwave. I want to order it online and send it to one of her neighbors who is an electrician and has agreed to hook it up for me and her. I think the simplest version is the best, the less supercalifragelistic dodads the better. Any suggestions as to model or from what online store to make the purchase will be appreciated.

Gayle,

You just did a fly-by on one of my pet peeves...Just WHAT the hell is up with today's technology ? It seems like everything we touch these days has so many freaking buttons, bells, whistles and doodads that they are virtually impossible to set up optimally and/or use with any degree of confidence. Case in point, Becky and I keep our mom's on our cell phone plan. Do you think for a second we can find a plain old ordinary cell phone with BIG numbers and an easy to read screen ? Hell no. Everything has to have an "App" these days and a camera and an MP3 player, yada, yada, yada. And to the person who would argue that you don't have to actually use these features...Well YOU try to explain to one of our mothers how not to hit the wrong key when dialing a number.

DVD players, home theater systems (remote control HELL), microwaves...even our new kitchen range is driving me F-N bats*** with all the buttons and settings. Makes me want to just find the people who design this stuff and lay an old fashioned butt whipping on 'em....<eh-hemmmm>....The again sitting here in an Oklahoma City hotel room whiling away the day might have something to do with my current frame of mind. :?

Carry on.

I have a Magnavox HDMI DP170MW8B and it's incredibly easy to use. I just have to turn the tv to channel 4 and turn it on and it pretty much goes. Fairly simple remote.

Thank you Steve and Megan.

I do have the same outlook as you do, Steve.

I'll look the Magnovox info up immediately, Megan.

Yeah, if you want to keep it simple, just go for the base models. They should be in the $30-40 range. Most of the brands are about the same, and the cheaper brand names don't mean much anymore. Different brands made in the same factory, etc..... A $30 DVD player should last for years with light-moderate use.

The virtues of a portable are that she wouldn't have to get up and walk across the room to change a DVD. BUT, it is probably good to get a little exercise no matter what age you are.....

Good luck

and that's exactly what mine is..a cheap one. Seriously, it doesn't do anything less than a very expensive one. And I don't need all the blue ray and stuff like that. I just want to watch a movie. I don't think I'm going to feel like I'm there on my 32 in screen.

Simple is best, especially under the circumstances.

We order presents from Target and have them delivered to a different address. Easy and have never had any trouble. Saves wrapping and shipping.

Anne's folks are not big tech people and ended up getting a combo TV-DVD unit. The DVD player is built into the TV and only one remote. This has worked out very for them.
And for Steve P, if you are still having trouble finding a simple cell phone, have you looked into Jitterbug? While I find the commercials very annoying, it looks like a good phone option for seniors.

Ordered the Magnovox from Amazon on Saturday evening. I got notice that it had already been shipped yesterday. - Thank you Megan.

I agree John that a TV/DVD player combination would be ideal, John. However I bought her a 30-inch digital TV for her birthday. Just wasn't fully thinking last May, I guess.

Along with the Jitterbug, for you old seniors, you can get a cane and a tour of the old folks homes.

My Dad looked into the Jitterbug for my Grandmother because she couldn't even understand the most basic Verizon cell phones, and they were expensive! Way more than you would assume to pay for something that only had a few buttons and NO features. Getting old is expensive
