HullabaLOU

by Steve P » Mon Nov 30, 2009 1:24 pm

Any thoughts on the HullabaLOU Music Festival that Churchill Downs announced today ?

My initial reaction is that, despite some talented rock and country acts that are scheduled to perform (albeit many of them "retreaded"), that Churchill's estimate of a 38 million dollar economic impact (per the press release) might just be a weeeee bit optimistic. What the heck though, if it generates a dollar, that's a dollar we didn't have before.

For those that missed the announcement, here's the link:

It's kind of a bizarre mix of acts!
$975.00 for a 3 day VIP pass is a little much for them as well.

3 Day General Admission:
Advance Price (through March 9, 2010) $160
Regular Price (Beginning March 10, 2010) $200

The general admission price isn't too bad, if you are like those bands.

I suppose looking at it from that perspective it's not too bad of a deal...if (as you say) a person happens to be into those bands. Personally, when we saw that there was supposed to be a "big announcement" we were really-really hoping it would be U2 <sniff> but no such luck.

I'm curious though, does anyone see this being a big draw for out of towners ? I'm still thinking they may be in for a rude awakening there...but who knows.

DMB has a pretty big following.

With that lineup it's obvious they're not shooting for a young crowd.

Very odd line-up to me. Seems like they decided to just book as many bands and genres as possible, hoping that someone would like 1 or 2 enough to pull the trigger on buying tickets. Even the way the bands are grouped together by day seems strange to me.

The young crowd can't swing the ticket and beer prices.

Looks like HasbeenaLOUzah to me... the biggest collection of State Fair bands evah!

I'd love to see Forecastle blossom into a Bonnaroo or SXSW (and get less jambandy)... Louisville has a name for indie and alt. Let's not go this geezer route.

As a child of the 80's, you know I love me some Bon Jovi, but not enough to pay those prices. I balked when Def Leppard were asking $100 for general admission for the Thanksgiving Eve show (that got cancelled,) and they're my favorite band. These geezers are gettin' too big for their britches! ;) :P

Funny how ya get older and little things like $$$ kinda come into play :( As I recall we didn't worry too much about the cost of concert tickets "back in the day"...of course back then we didn't have mortgage payments, education expenses, etc, etc. <sigh>

"Back in the day," concert tickets probably didn't cost $100, either.

<chuckle> No they sure didn't. Becky has a collection of many of our ticket stubs she collected over the years. One of them is from a Bruce Springsteen New Years Eve show (in CLE) when we were first dating back in 77 or 78...I think the price shown on the stub is $12.50.

I put myself through college...or let me rephrase that...I paid for my beer in college by working the "window" at Ticketron (now Ticketmaster). As I recall most shows during the late 70's and early 80's were in that $10-15 range...ya might have seen something higher if it were the Stones, etc. Some of the prices now are absolutely out of control and forget about getting "good seats" unless you want to pay both arms and a leg getting your tickets through the "secondary" market.

Heck, my ticket for the first Lollapalooza was only $35. Ticket prices are stupid anymore.
