Shoe stores--shoe fitting

by Charles W. » Wed Nov 25, 2009 10:07 am

My wife has plantar fasciitis again. She used to find shoes that worked well at the Shoe Store downtown, but they stopped carrying Zeeta shoes. Where can you go in Louisville for a good shoe fitting that also carries supportive (but not completely unfashionable) shoes? I wondered about Knott shoes at the Summit.

My mom is a devoted wearer of Finn Comfort shoes and she goes to the Knotts at the Summit. She swears by their customer service. (In fact, the mall location is much closer, but she drives to the Summit specifically for their service.)

The Gould Company on Dutchmans Lane is a medical supply company that among other things does shoes for problems like that. From what I understand the doctors consider them the best. It is possible that insurance would pay part of the cost. Medicare does if a doctor sends you.

Knott Shoes offers among the best fitting and customer service in the area...their shoes can be pricey, versus many competitors, but the quality is excellent.

I have a story about Knott's Shoes (in the Mall!). I've often bought my expensive kitchen clogs there - buying them over the internet doesn't always get the right fit.

I bought a new pair of Danskos there in June, and ever since I bought them, the right shoe squeaked with every step I took anywhere. "There's something sticky on the bottom," people would say. It sure sounded like it, but believe me, I washed the bottom of that clog so many times (once I even took sandpaper to it), so I knew that wasn't it. For awhile I thought "once they're broken in, it'll stop squeaking" but that never happened - and believe me, I wear them at least 40-50 hours a week.

Finally one day I overheard students saying "you can always hear her coming down the hall, her clog squeaks!", so I decided to take some action ;). I drove over to the Mall (this was in October!) and went in and asked them if they could do ANYTHING to stop the squeaking. They had me march up and down the six foot linoleum strip in front of their register for about 15 minutes. All the folks that work there (they're all in their 60's or older) were bent over, hands on their knees, watching me walk back and forth and back and forth, listening. They took it in the back a couple times and injected something in between the layers. BUT IT STILL WOULDN'T STOP SQUEAKING.

So I sighed, and thanked them for trying, preparing to go. To my total shock, they said "oh, no, we can't let you leave here like that!" and went in the back, came out and presented me with a brand new pair ($120 price tag!). "I'm sorry, I don't have the receipt with me...I don't even think I have it anymore," I said.

"That's okay, we believe you. Here. Enjoy. We'll get OUR money back from Dansko."

Unbelievable! I won't be buying clogs anywhere else for a long time.

I also have frequent bouts with plantar fasciitis. The owner of Footworks in St. Matthews is wonderful in fitting you with a shoe that will help with the situation! She has worked with me for many years and it has always worked when I wear out a pair!

She comes from a family of podiatrists!
