Ebay vs. Craigslist .....

by Becky M » Mon Oct 26, 2009 1:02 pm

From bits and pieces it sounds as if some people here sell on Ebay and CL. I was wondering which one works out better?, that is if anyone does both.

I have been trying to sell some things on CL, but no one really wants to pay anything. I price my things really cheap, but nothing. And a lot of stuff i am selling is brand new. My husband was telling me that Ebay might be better because there is a different type of people that shop ebay.

CraigSlist is more a "local" demo with eBay covering the entire world. If you can ship/mail the item with relative ease I would try eBay.

Craigslist is also free, eBay has a fee and gets a cut of the selling price.

I didnt know ebay got a cut of the selling price. Is this a percentage of price or something?

i was wondering about success rate. Which brings a better sale?

On eBay you pay a small fee to list an item, fees for enhanced listings (more pics, etc.), and then pay a percentage of the selling cost.

The trick with selling on eBay is selling things people want to buy. Used clothing, for instance, usually goes way cheap even though the seller thinks they're worth a lot. Big items are a pain on eBay because of shipping. If you have something in high demand, you can make big bucks. But user fees can eat you up. My wife has been selling a lot on eBay this fall, and we're up to $40 in eBay fees at this point.

Well we do both. I posted a forklift on CL for a couple of weeks and got no interest at all. Put it up on Ebay and had a number bidders and it went for alot more than what we were asking for on CL. I have sold some machinery with CL that I couldn't move at all on Ebay. My take is Ebay is good to sell collectors items, hard to find industrial parts, and restoration material. CL tends to be better for selling appliances, household goods, construction material, yard tools/furniture and some machinery. I maintain a 100 percent positive rating on Ebay, and those goes a long way to bring in sales.Ebay does have alot of fees, I just work that cost into my asking price and it works out fine. Its a little buried, but you can find a chart with all the fees ebay charges on their site.
The tall one wants white toast, dry, with nothin' on it.
And the short one wants four whole fried chickens, and a Coke.

In the past, we've sold an almost new bicycle on Craigslist and bought a motorcycle. I've been trying to sell some like-new clothing on Craigslist since July. I keep getting emails from people interested in the entire lot, but they never respond back to me when I try to make arrangments. I've bought some Thomas the Train stuff and a replacement Feista Ware plate with no problems on Ebay. I like Craigslist because it's local and I don't have to worry about doing things through the mail or setting up a PayPal account.

Shameless promotion here-

Ladies, I have a ton of clothing for sell. It simply doesn't fit me or my career anymore. Let me know if you're interested and I'll give you more info.
