Good Scenic Route.....

by Becky M » Fri Oct 23, 2009 5:30 pm

I know we have done "route" threads before, but mostly with some sort of food as the destination.

It seems like the weather is supposed to be nice tomorrow and i want to take the family for a nice drive to see the beautiful fall colors. Any suggestions on where we could go for a nice scenic drive.......doesnt matter if Louisville or Indiana...... just something where we can really get all the beautiful colors and maybe even stop for a little picnic..........

picnic part not necessary........but would be a nice plus........

I just heard about this on the radio today.

FRANKFORT, Ky. — Gov. Steve Beshear today announced that three Kentucky scenic corridors — Lincoln Heritage Highway, Kentucky Great River Road and Woodlands Trace — have been elevated to National Scenic Byway designation by the Federal Highway Administration.

The rest of the story follows in this link

The tall one wants white toast, dry, with nothin' on it.
And the short one wants four whole fried chickens, and a Coke.

Bernheim Forest. Scenic route .. 31e (Bardstown rd) to 245. Turn right. 245 is before the business part of Bardstown. Forest on left.

Probably quicker .. I-65 to 245 going towards Bardstown.

There is a small fee on Sat and Sunday .. I believe 5.00/carload . not per person. Plenty places to picnic and hike. Visitor center. Pretty empty during week. Don't know about weekend.

Check out my Covered Bridge Road & Anchorage Trail thread...Another good option is E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park...A relaxing mile and a half Goose Creek nature trail...though it can be somewhat scary around sunset as you near the Central State Lunatic Asylum Cemetery...But Hey, it's October...What's an October without experiencing a few chills down your spine...lol...Plus it's always cool to check out the remote control airplanes flying about...and they should be out in full force if the weather is nice...

My favorite drive- out 42 to the Westport turnoff (is it 529?) Down that road to 18 mile Road- a beautiful little 4 mile road through a lot of forest. Then on to Westport and a stop to see Will at the Westport General Store.

These would have been my 2 favorites as well. Berheim Forest is one of my favorite wandering places. There's a distillery or 2 you can visit out that way as well.

I also like the drive out 42 past Eastpoint (?) where you can cut over and see the river from State hyway 524 then back onto 42 on to Bedford and state highway 421 north and across the river into Madison. Nice little restaurant in Madison to enjoy.

I just took this road trip last weekend myself. We started around 9:00AM and we got home around 8:30PM, but we were in no hurry and just enjoyed the day
I like to call this the "Southern Indiana Leaf-Peeping Loop"
Take I-65 N to Columbus, IN ,Turn Left on IN 46 to Nashville, IN

Nashville at this time of year is a mob scene that I like to avoid, but the rest of the year, it's a nice little town.
You can drive through Brown County State Park that offers several scenic vistas.
Head back out to IN 46 west bound to Bloomington, IN. Ride around and look at the beautiful Indiana University campus. Have lunch at FARM bloomington. It's very good.

Head South on IN 37 to Mitchell through Bedford.
Turn Left on IN 60, look for Spring Mill State Park on your left about 4 miles after you pass Mitchell. If you saved your receipt from Brown County you can use it for entry into Spring Mill which has a neat old timey Pioneer Village complete with a working grist mill where you can buy some corn meal. This is really nice in the fall and they have period re-enactors and differend programs during the day. Remember the Village is only open until 5:00PM

Leaving Spring Mill Turn Left on IN 60 again and follow to Borden where you will look on the right for Dow Knob Rd about 3 miles on the right once you pass through Borden.(It's hard to see, If you pass Bogie's Golf on the left then turn around in the parking lot and go back because you just passed it). This will take you to the top of the Knobs and all of the Agro-tourism places like Huber's and Stumler's. There are signs at the top of the hill pointing you in the right direction. It will probably be getting close to dinner time so you might like to try Joe Huber's Restaurant. I strongly urge making a reservation this time of year.

After you fill up on fried biscuits and chicken, just follow the signs back out to the expressway.
This is a great day and a very scenic drive! Enjoy, I know we did! :D :D :D
