Area Thrift Stores

by John Hagan » Mon Oct 19, 2009 9:37 am

Just wondering if anybody has recommendations for good thrift stores. We will hit the Unique on Preston and the the other location nearer downtown, but lately they have got pretty unrealistic in their pricing. We have found some good deals and sold some items we found there on Ebay for a pretty good profit, but were still looking for some new places. One other problem we have with Unique is that they are a for profit operation, not that there's anything wrong with that, just would rather see our money go to a charity as many thrifts do.

John, in all honesty, I've had really good luck with the St. Matthews Good Will store. It's clean, well organized and the people are very friendly. I've gotten some really good buys there, like a leather jacket for $10 :D I've also found some slacks there that were very name brand for cheap prices..

Try the St. Vincent DePaul Thrift stores. There are several locations.

I've also had some luck at the Salvation Army stores.

You hit me where I live. The Goodwills are becoming the best thrift shops in town. Unique is a for profit company and their pricing has been getting out of sight lately. There is a New Look (I think that is the name) on Lewis and Clark Pkwy in Clarksville, the Nearly New shop in Mid city Mall, The DAV on Berry Blvd, saintly Treasures on Manslick Rd.(limited hours). If you are doing eBay, consider going to auctions. auctionzip.com is a great resource for local auctions. :D

Does Louisville have any surplus and salvage stores?

We have a chain here in Maine that has catch-as-catch-can stuff. For instance they'll occasionally have clothing from stores that have gone under or in-date overstock groceries.

Nearly New Shop at the Mid City Mall is ALL about bargains. I've been going there since I was in grade school and it's only improved over the years, without marking up the prices. I also go to the Unique on Preston, but the one downtown I stopped going to a while back - I think it's trashy and unorganized for the prices they're asking. And yes, the one on Preston has also gone up almost to the point of pointlessness, but at least it's tidy.

I keep hearing things about St. Vincent De Paul but I've never been. I just always end up at my staple places.

#1 top of my list for the best women's attire at affordable prices (they also have a men's section, but I'm just a lady) - Margaret's on Frankfort. I can easily spend a hundred dollars in an hour and leave with five new outfits and a pair of shoes. Housewares section is slim if not absent, though. If your looking for quality non-garment things to resell, I'd look into the Nearly New Shop. They expanded into the lower-lower level and have a ton of stuff well priced.

Unique Thrift Store on Preston Highway has been the king of thrift stores for years. There is also one on 22nd Street in Portland.

Thanks for the ideas. Unique(either location) has been our go to thrift after we moved here, but with the higher prices now its just working out as well.Thats really a shame because it is well organized and relatively clean (Preston location more so). Im thinking the St Vincent De Paul might be the next one we check out. We have run into those up in Michigan and had good luck. I also ran across this site that reviews local thrift stores. http://www.thethriftshopper.com/city/Lo ... e/KY/2.htm

John i have always liked St. Vincent de Paul. They are a bit smaller, but good deals, especially with their daily specials and nice selection of stuff. I like Goodwill stores as well, but sometimes they overprice some things, crazily. But they do get some "new" things from stores, Target it seems and if you can find that stuff that is not messed up/torn/broken you can get a good deal on them.

I used to go to the Salvation Army a lot, but they have also gotten a bit overpriced on some items. And i am not being cheap here, just silly overpricing. Some dressers, bookcases, furniture type things are in the 100's range; Little silly to me.

New to You from New Hope Svs is good as well. They are small, and the store a bit junky, but you can find some good deals.

Overall thrift stores have to be frequented to find good finds.

Do you mind me asking if you are shopping just for personal things or to resell?

While I do check out goodwill, sometimes I just cant believe what they are asking for stuff. Often more than what you would pay new at retail. Recent examples I remember seeing, a microwave for over a hundred bucks and an old cabinet type stereo with an eight track for over two hundred.
Part of the reason we go to thrift stores is we tear up clothes pretty bad. The greenhouse is tough on stuff and our other work (fireworks) turns everything black and sooty. I wear Levis and can usually find them for five bucks or less, that works for me.I know some folks would rather get new from an online mass merchant and wait around for a good deal or coupon, but thats not our style. In addition I go around and look for other item to resell on ebay. Just last week I picked up a very nice heavy copper Maurviel sauce pan for a song. Not sure if Im going to keep that one or resell. I guess thats a big part of the thrift store appeal, you never know what you might find. Plus Anne is always looking for a raspberry beret, you know... like the ones you find in a second hand store.

I like Unique a lot, but my favorite thrift store is One for All in the Douglass Loop -- 1975 Douglass Blvd. It's kind of hard to find, but it's behind the Twig & Leaf and related storefronts. From Bardstown Road, you turn off onto Douglass Blvd. and quickly turn right to go down an alley to get to One for All's parking lot. (Somebody clarify this if I'm not getting it right)

I have found One for All's clothing selection to be incredibly good, especially shirts. Of course, I'm talking about men's clothing. And I felt like many of the prices were a steal. And what's especially nice is that their proceeds go to HIV/AIDS-related charities.

I hope everyone checks them out.

This place is great, and has been around a pretty long time. I remember going there in high school and finding rare rock LPs in the $3-5 range.

Dang, I miss those crazy stores. And the Uncle Henry's Guide. For some reason, reading the Thrifty Nickel isn't as fun.
