10'000 applicants for 90 G.E. jobs

by Steve P » Thu Oct 08, 2009 12:11 pm

Just read that G.E. had 10'000 applicants for 90 jobs paying $13 dollars an hour making washing machines here in L'ville (jobs that previously paid $19 hr). Also read that the new VW plant in TN has had over 18'000 applicants for salaried positions alone and expects over 100'000 applicants for the 2000 production jobs.

Well, my husband was one of those 10000 then. he's been unemployed since April and it's worth a chance. The internet screening they do was a joke. Asked you most things like "how many times have you stolen from work in the last 5 yrs?" "How many unexcused absences in a year are acceptable" "Are you ok with making $13 an hour?" No previous work history information really needed other than the EEO stuff. And then they tell you to check your email daily for the next 4 weeks. Ugh. Seriously, I feel like he's never going to get a job, though it's becoming like a full time job for him trying to find one that pays more than $10 an hr.

The job situation is extremely tough now. Within the last year or so one of my sons, a daughter in law, and a son in law were all out of work for a significant number of months. The son and daughter in law are in the IT field and have much experience and education. They got jobs making way above average wage, but not as good as before. The son in law also got a job after some months, but not what you would consider GOOD. My daughter is safe being a school teacher with 15 years experience. My son sells chickens and makes about three times the daughter, but is definitely worried about losing his job. The company is shaky.

It really is a full time job looking for a job now. A couple of restaurants and liquor stores tell me they have no trouble getting good people for little pay and usually no benefits.

When I was younger jobs were easier. I lost a number of jobs because of companies closing etc. I laid up collecting my guvmint check aka unemployment insurance for a few months. A few phone calls and interviews always got another job as good or better. Doesn't happen much now.
