Starting to look like an overfilled email box

by John Hagan » Sat Sep 12, 2009 8:06 am

This section of the forum(all about Louisville) is starting to look like one of my old email boxes. Its filled with ads for stores in the mall and coupons for fast food chains. Whats up with that? Im sure the posters have the best of intentions, but thought this place was more about promoting local/indie joints and less about huge corporate chain shops.

And the short one wants four whole fried chickens, and a Coke.

I thought this was just a space to promote anything going on in Louisville. I appreciate the heads up on good deals.

My problem as forum host is that I want EVERYONE to be happy! :D

I have to admit that I don't eat at a lot of the East End chain places that Annemarie posts, but some people certainly do, and I've always appreciated that she takes the time to find and share them.

It would be possible to create a separate forum section for coupons and deals, but I've been a little reluctant to do that for fear of "Balkanizing" the forum and creating a bunch of low-traffic sections. Still, I'd be happy to hear from you, John, and Annemarie and anyone else who'd like to express an opinion on that.

Bottom line, I hear John's concern because it's good for "All About Louisville" to have a variety of interesting topics on its first page. But I also want to thank Annemarie and not jump on her for putting out a fair amount of effort to share special deals and offers with others who appreciate them.

It's a dilemma, and I'm looking for help here, folks!

annemarie m wrote:thanks jessica. believe it or not their are people who like a good deal, and people who like to eat at chains. these days saving money is the game. if it bothers you, don't read it. i knew sooner or later their would be a few on here that would gripe. it isn't hurting no one, and the positive feedback from my emails is an enormous thank you. theirs always a scrooge in every batch. geeze people. :o

Count me among the folks who appreciate the posts. Why just in the past week I found out what color of panties Annemarie wears AND saved a boatload of money on restaurant.com certificates. Can't beat that with a stick. :D

I was wondering if we could rename the friends and fun section of this forum to better accommodate that type of post. Thats a section that has become fairly stagnant,I know my rather lame attempt at humor has been languishing at the top of that section for some time. It would be nice to see some more activity there.

Nor do I wish to jump on Annemarie, it just seemed a lot of stuff was getting pushed to the next page for the advertising posts, most of which had few if any replies.

Hmm. "Coupons, deals and off-topic fun?"

I think that's a great idea. Is there anyway to make the "Friends and Fun" section appear on the page when I click on "Forum" from the main page? To view that section, I have to click on "Board Index". It's just a couple of extra clicks, but I think many forget it's even there because of that.

Like I said, I do appreciate the posts on good deals. I'm just as guilty since I posted the Chick-fil-A one last week. However, the last thing I want to see is members, including myself, feeling uncomfortable posting something when we/they think it's a good deal and that there may be others that feel the same way.

Robin.... first, i always think about the tough job you have of "moderating" this funky bunch here.... (excuse my 90's reference there  ) . In my opinion, you do a great job of smoothing things out.

On to the issue...... i was reading a thread yesterday where someone mentioned a Buy One Burger Get One Free On Tuesdays at a local restaurant. I said to myself, wow, that's cool. And had the thought that there should be a forum/thread/insert correct word here where people could post deals that restaurants are having. Happy hours, special dinners, that awesome burger deal that i now cannot find!.... stuff like that.

Now, i know nothing about what it takes to run a forum, or how much work is involved to add another one of those link thingys that is on the main board index site. This is just my selfish suggestion.......

I don't mind Annemarie posting the deals, i think it is a good thing. I don't shop at Macy's or Victoria's Secret....i just didn't open them up. Same with the many beer threads.......i don't drink anymore.... so i just don't open them. They don't bother me, it is a good thing there is much diversity and different tastes/interests here.

Yeah, I *think* it's pretty easy to do that. :)

My two cents ... I agree that pulling up "All About Louisville" and seeing something about a sale at Macy's or Limited is not what I hope for or expect to see. I'm not fussing about them being on the board, just not sure I want to sift through those sorts of things in this page.

The "coupon threads" don't bother me at all. Of course, they hold little interest for me, so I seldom open them and just move along and appreciate they may be of interest to others.

I think it is time for a new coupon/discount forum. This forum has nothing to do with Louisville anymore.

There's still plenty of Louisville stuff interspersed ... it's a good idea to avoid generalities like "nothing," "everything," "always" and "never." 8)

However, there's been talk about making the Off-Topic Forum into Off Topic and Coupons, and we may yet do that.

Problem is, a lot of folks appreciate Annemarie's coupon postings, and we don't need to stomp on that. But maybe we can have it both ways ...
