I don't know about beating anyone, but here is how I came out. Almost the same as Gandhi? I am far from Gandhi, but this is the result.........
Economic Left/Right: -6.12
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -2.97

I think one of the sources of confusion on "libertarian" may be differences between the US and Europe. For me, the sine qua non of organized libertarianism in the US is an the absolute right to keep and bear arms. I am a believer in gun regulation. In Europe every country maintains some kind of gun regulation far stricter than the US. So I would never describe myself as a libertarian in the US because of my support for limited gun control.

I don't know Gandhi's particular stand on gun control, but I question his inclusion in the libertarian camp as well.

So which coloered block does that put me into? :?

Yeah. No ads for me either. I wouldn't have posted something with popup ads. I always just close those too. Annoying.

On on hand, power is inherent to the system. On the other hand, it does seem overly paternalistic for some of our leaders to find purpose by making other people dependent to/on them.
This is interesting. You've tagged yourself as being off-the-scale left, but you recognize that government solutions might not actually help those it claims to be helping, at least in the sense of being free and independent.

I think government solutions can help and should help.

I have issues with the word dependency, which I first used!. That word comes from deficiency thinking - that only those w/o other options would be dependent. As would be the case with national, universal healthcare, we would not all be dependent, we would just be (it's universal after all)*. The issue with dependency is not that the government is involved but that participants in the government manipulate the less powerful for their own purposes. Our use of the word dependency in relation to governmental aid is tied to our own governmental mode. So the powerful exploit the less powerful by telling them they are looking out for the less powerful. My issue is not with government aid; my issue is with the way the leaders manipulate the aid as a way to manipulate people. And here we've arrived at the main argument against socialism - the inability to change human nature.

* Universal healthcare is great in theory, but problematic in our current governmental model because of the utter distrust that exists toward the central government. Given who we elect and how they act, I can't really find fault with such distrust. Having said that, I still support universal healthcare on the basis of basic human rights.

Matthew D wrote:Obviously a true left agenda would emanate from the people themselves, not from a select few. Alas, one of the drawbacks of a representative democracy is that significant power is invested in those who have the ability to represent, often at the cost of democracy.
This is also interesting. You are describing a left agenda as arising from the people themselves. This seems close to an anarchist outlook; which I'd place further out on the libertarian extreme, definitely not something on the left. What is the role of the central government in your view?

Collective ownership, following the proletariat revolt.

I'll have to consider your final question and get back to you.

I went to the site http://www.politicalcompass.org/ using two different browsers and got no ads whatsoever. Did you maybe go to politicalcompass.com by mistake, Carla?

Gottcha. I see what I did. I went to the correct site but clicked on the wrong link. Many thanks for the assistance.
After taking the test I found myself dead center of the green square right with the Dali Lama. (He dresses better.)

I am slightly in the purple.
My comment that started this compass business was that the libertarian right and progressive left aren't far apart. Meaning purple people who not only support gun rights, but property rights and minimal government interference in day to day life aren't that different from the green folks in our mutual distrust of corporatism, endless wars, etc. The main difference is whether you like government to run welfare or if you want charities to be in charge.
Reading Ron Paul's campaign for liberty and Glenn Greenwald's Salon columns you see a lot of the same themes: Why are we bailing out private companies? Why are we in Afghanistan? Will someone please retract the so-called Patriot Act?

Appropriateness for this site is the common feeling that local stuff tends to be better than corporate stuff which is why I suspect we have no one above the x axis in the forum.

Agreed. http://PoliticalCompass.org is a legitimate site without any kind of spamming/scamming like that. Carla maybe typed in a .com by mistake rather than just clicking on the link to .org?

I let this one run in the main forum as long as it was yielding steady conversation, but now that it has started to drift down the page, it seems more appropriate to shovel it over here ...
