One of my favorites which I'm re-reading now, it's a wonderful, funny, thoughtful, inspiring story.

A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving

The novel is told through the eyes of a mature John Wheelwright, an English teacher at a private girls' school in Canada, who elaborates on the events surrounding his close friendship with Owen Meany during the 1950s and 1960s in a small town and at a private boarding school in New England. These events, John makes clear, are responsible for his belief in God.
Owen Meany has a striking appearance and personality. He is unusually tiny with an ethereal and adorable appearance. His voice, described by John as "wrecked", commands immediate attention. Children and adults alike are drawn to Owen, and many people, such as John's mother Tabitha, are unable to resist touching him. Others' urges to touch him often put Owen in embarrassing situations, such as a Sunday School ritual in which his classmates hold him over their heads and pass him around the room. Owen is extremely intelligent and self-possessed, even as a child. He directs the actions of many of the people around him by either charming them, frightening them, or craftily manipulating them.

Keeping it food related, Id suggest Bill Bufords book Heat. Look it up on Amazon for a good description. I found it to be a very enjoyable read.Otherwise, you cant go wrong with any of the Bourdain titles.

I loved a Prayer for Owen Meany as well. Perhaps my favorite of all of Irvings books.
Lately I've been into mysteries so I've been reading the John Reacher series by Lee Child. And then there's Nelson DeMille (Plum Island, The Generals Daughter, Charm School, Gold Coast)
I also like the non-fiction of Oliver Sacks.

Ummm... so many! I can't always remember the authors but:
Ahab's Wife - written by a woman who teaches at U of L. It's a look at life from the point of view of Ahab's (of Moby Dick) wife. Very cool, written that "old style"
Anything by Barbara KIngsolver (Beantrees, Poisonwood Bible)
A second for Nelson DeMille and I always love W E B Griffen and anything by James Michner
Oh! Read Don't Stop The Carnival by Herman Wouk. Jimmy Buffet did an album (actually a play) that you can listen to while reading it.

Yeah I like Sadaris too. Me Talk Pretty Someday is pretty good.
I think The Jungle should be mandatory reading for anyone in the food industry.
Of interest to foodies might be "The Man Who Tasted Shapes" by Richard Cytowic MD. It's a non-fiction book written by a neurologist about synesthesia, a cross wiring in the brain that for some folks makes tastes take on specific shapes or colors in their mouth.

Twilight Series by Stephanie Meyers (I know, I am NOT a teenage girl but there were seriuosly good reads)

Host by Stephanie Meyers (Creepy, sci-fi like)

Anything written by Jodi Piccoult (She has tons of books, Saving Faith is older, but one of my favs. They are all good though. Except I couldn't get through Songs of the Humpback Whale)

Easy summer reading-Cassandra King, Janet Evanovich, Stuart Woods, Harlen Coben and some of Anita Shrieve's stuff, some is too heavy though.

The Shack by ? Young -More of a spiritual journey, not churchy.

Loved Heat and all of these. ( Brian now refers to Bourdain as my "boyfriend".. ) My favorite food book remains "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle" by Barbara Kingsolver.

I love the food travel books like "Under the Tuscan Sun", and "A Year in Provence". I also enjoyed "Julie and Julia" ( if you like to cook you can really get some good laughs out of it).

A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole.
Absolutely one of the funniest books I have ever read with one of the most unique "anti-heroes" put to paper. On a darker note, the author committed suicide after writing the novel before it was published which lends a certain poignancy to one's reading of the work.
