Computer Classes

by Madi D » Mon Jul 20, 2009 10:22 pm

I'm looking for someone who offers computer classes. My friend just purchased a Mac laptop and wants to learn how to really use all its functions, and both of us are interested in taking a course to better educate ourselves on using the computer as it relates to running a small business. Specifically using Quickbooks to its full capacity and possibly designing/ running a webpage. I realize that's a wide variety of needs but we would love to look at a list of classes and choose appropriate ones to participate in.

Does anyone know of a business or school that offers these types of classes?
Any suggestions on who is helpful and who to avoid on this subject?

Your input would be appreciated.
Thanks!

you might try the library. when my stepdad started his mortgage business, my mom wanted to quit her job blowing fiberglass insulation into attics (what a tough lady my momma is) and work for him. can you blame her? she knew the very basics of using a computer but needed to learn more about using office related functions and programs. she went to the public library and took their free classes and caught on in no time. she said they exceeded her expectations and were very thorough and educational. as i said they are FREE and the cool thing about the library is that there's one in just about every zip code, making the classes very convenient. if you have kids and they are old enough to be turned loose in the library, you could probably even take them with you and let them browse books or listen to a story while you take your class. the free public library system is pretty awesome, IMO.

also, i'm fairly certain that i've heard of some of the staples/office depot/best buy-type stores offering cheap or free classes about computers/software use. give them a call and see what they offer.

good luck!

Jefferson County Public Schools have adult education classes that deal with computers. A couple of people that I know have taken them and they vary from ok to good. It depends on the instructor. All of the instructors have experience but not all are good teachers.

There is also a company called Video Professor. They sell discs on various subjects. Put the disc in your computer and it plays a video lesson. I used them years ago when I first started using a computer. They are very easy to follow and good instruction. Not very expensive. Lot of different subjects.

The Mac Authority store on Breckenridge just south of Shelbyville Rd. has classes.
