we got internet and cable recently. we shopped around first, or course. i'm with at&t for my cell phone and have a friend working for them. my friend said they were by far the cheapest so we stopped by his store to check out our options. their internet required a contract and a hefty deposit on the modem/router (which we would have had to wait two to three weeks for as it would have to be shipped to us). it seemed too expensive, even bundled with my cell phone bill. also, because of where we live, certain connection speeds weren't available to us and that turned us off as well. we decided to call insight and were glad we did. they beat the price on service and equipment, and did not require any contract whatsoever. we paid the start up costs with a credit card over the phone (i think it was 50 bucks, but keep in mind we got internet AND cable), and they showed up early the next morning to hook everything up. we were surfing the web and watching cable less than 24 hours after we had called them. our bill monthly is only 90 bucks for both services. their customer service is 24 hours and always very knowlegable and friendly. i recommend insight for internet (and cable if you decide to get it).

Insight. You can get internet without cable, $44.95 per month at 10 mbps. You will not find another provider in town at that price for that speed. I have had my gripes with them, but compared to the alternative of a 3G wireless card through a cell provider, you can't beat the price for the bandwidth. They will supply the modem, and you can get a basic wireless router for $30 or $40 at Wal-mart or Target. No contracts, no deposit.

they brought a wireless router and installed it for us along with the modem. i think we paid them a bit extra for it but it saved us a trip to target/wal-mart.

We have our DSL through AT&T. $39 per month for their "middle of the road" speed.

BTW, I was kind of surprised to find out about 6 mos ago that you do NOT have to have landline phone service in order to have DSL. For too many years I kept my landline on only because I thought I had to have it in order to get DSL. Wrong. I was paying AT&T (I think) 69 bucks a mos for phone service (that I didn't use) and DSL. Once I made this discovery I promptly canceled my landline and saved myself $30 a month...Which I use to buy beer.

Give Iglou.com a look for ADSL. Yes, it's ATT under the hood, but getting it from a local company is a big plus, philosophically and for customer service. Very nice people, and a long record of excellent consumer service in Louisville.

Iglou also generously provides space for much of LouisvilleHotBytes.com, although we actually run the forums on our own servers out of town <blush> because of the bandwidth involved.
