Credit Unions

by Rebecca Clark » Wed Jul 15, 2009 2:42 pm

I am looking to make a switch from a regular bank to a credit union due to deep discontentment with my bank.

If you use a credit union for your financial transactions, which one and why do you like it?

If you had a bad experience with one, would you mind expounding on the matter?

Thanks for any information you can provide! :)

I've always used credit unions. I'm currently with L&N. Free checking, very few restrictions, online banking. If you travel a lot, a nationwide bank might be helpful in certain situations and free ATM's might be a little harder to come by, otherwise, no issues.

Most Credit Unions are in the same shared ATM network so you can use a participating ATM's for free. L&N also has an agreement locally for free access to Republic Bank ATM's. With direct deposit, I hardly ever need to visit an office.

I second the L&N recommendation. Been with them for years and had nothing but positive experiences.

I can't speak about credit unions, but we've had wonderful experience with Louisville's new Eclipse Bank, in the new building in St. Matthews where the White Castle used to be. Extremely nice folks, professional bank, and they bring a whole new and unexpected attitude (friendly and neighborly) to banking.

I'd like to switch. I hate PNC.

Park Community

Awesome!, Awesome!, service and the checking account deal they have is a steal.

Great rate without opening a CD.

Get HI Checking and earn 3.26% APY*
(effective March 1, 2009)

To get this unbelievable rate, you’ll probably only have to continue what you’re already doing each cycle, simply meet these 3 requirements:

Make 12 Debit Card Transactions (signature based, not PIN based)
Have 1 Direct Deposit to your HI Checking Account
Enroll & Receive Electronic Statements
Plus Earn ATM Fee Refunds**

That’s right. If you meet all of the 3 requirements, you’ll receive no surcharge on any ATM you use, and you’ll get up to $15 in foreign ATM fees refunded at the end of each cycle.

When you meet all three requirements, you’ll get:

3.26% APY* paid on balances up to $25,000
1.01% APY* paid on the portion of the balance over $25,000

If you live anywhere close to St. Matthews, check out Eclipse! Friendly local people, and they pay the ATM fees for you no matter where you use it.

We have accounts with both Park & L&N. Park has great customer service, unfortunately they seem to be in a eternal state of confusion. They always have to ask a coworker how to do something. The loan rates are really good. L&N's customer service has slipped lately, do largely to employee turnover. The loan rates @ L&N seen uncompetitive.
