Need sharpening service - not knives

by Mike Hardin » Fri Mar 06, 2009 12:37 pm

I've got an axe, hatchet, maul and machete that I'd like to have sharpened to a razor's edge (or as close as possible). Does anyone have any suggestions on where I can take them? I've had St. Matthews Hardware sharpen the hatchet and they did a good job but I'd like something a little finer than a lawnmower blade edge.

Thanks.

Got some "pests" you're needing to "dispose" of? :?

No, just want my equipment as efficient as possible. I've found the machete to be invaluable in trimming up the debris from the last few storms. If I get my birthday wish, I'll be getting one of these. http://www.woodmanspal.com

Steve Shade, a forumite, used to have a knife-sharpening business. I remember drinking a beer and talking with him about the business and the interesting characters (and he's one, too :) ). I kind of think he's hung up his whetstone, but he'd know where to look.

You really don't want a "razor's edge" on those type of tools. The very sharp knife edge is fairly weak and on axes, etc just a few hard whacks will completely ruin the edge. These should be sharpened to about 30 degrees. A knife between 17 and 22 degrees.
