WANTED: Live Elmo for party

by Marsha L. » Tue Mar 03, 2009 12:39 pm

Okay, this is a really weird question, but if this exists in Louisville one of you weirdos will know about it. I'm usually good at digging up things for this kind of unusual request, but I'm at a brick wall on this one.

I'm doing a cake for a birthday party later this month for a 2-year-old. The party has an Elmo theme, with the added attraction of the Tumblebus (never heard of Tumblebus before? me, neither, until now.) The mother has pretty specific visions of how this party's gonna go, and one of the things she wants is a live, person-sized Elmo to show up at the party and cavort with the kids.

Well....I called Blue Apple Players to ask them if they could give me any direction on this, but they just suggested I call Caufield's - which I did, but they don't know anyone that does kids' parties (?), and they don't rent costumes, and they don't SELL adult-sized Elmo costumes.

I have a call in to "The Event Company", a company downtown that does all sorts of corporate parties and weddings and what have you, and am waiting for them to call me back.

So, any of you have an Elmo Costume in the back of your closet? If so, I don't want to know why, just get it dry-cleaned and tell me how much you'd charge. I'm not making anything off the Elmo segment of the proceedings - I just love a challenge, and I'd love to find Elmo for her!

Well, I admit I'm disappointed, Ed. Maybe you left it somewhere?

Very possible. In my glorious firefighter youth I would dress as Sparky the Dalmatian Firedog and appear with a talking robotic hydrant during fire prevention week. I left that behind when the robot got more lines than I did.

Marsha,
Try Horner Novelty on Spring St in Jeffersonville, In. We wandered through there one day just killing some time and they had 3 floor of "stuff". Don't specifically remember Elmo but they had a lot of children related party things. Their # is 812-283-5050.

Thanks, Deb. I called them and they were real nice - it's sorta iffy because there's copyright issues, but they will call me if they hear about a live Elmo ;)

They said they get this request pretty often...

I know a red-haired guy who's pretty hairy. How smart are these 2-year-olds?

Heh. Smart enough to know the difference, I'm guessing. They're probably pickier about Elmo-authenticity than we adults would be!

You should call some singing telegram businesses. I ordered an Elvis a couple of years ago for my mom and dad's 40th anniversary and they really enjoyed it. He stayed for close to an hour and even renewed their vows. They may have someone or know someone that does Elmo.

Marsha,

I hope this is not too late to be of help, but if she's still around, you need Louise Cecil. She was the costume lady. Rented 1000s of costumes out of a big building in Buechel for many years, and now googles as:

Louise Cecil Costumes
817 S Floyd St
Louisville, KY 40203
(502) 589-6707

If anybody can help you, it is Louise.
My memory's not as sharp as it used to be.
