Jewelry Repair Question

by Leann C » Tue Feb 17, 2009 6:33 pm

I somehow managed to bend and break one of the little prongs that holds the diamond in place in my engagement ring. Now the stone rattles and I'm afraid it's going to fall out. So I haven't been wearing it. Does anyone have a recommendations for where I could have the prong repaired locally?

Leann, I've dealt a couple times with the little jewelry store located in the center across the street from Doll's. They are very nice and talk you through what they are doing.

I suspect practically any jewelry store can probably do the kind of work that you require, but I've had some occasional work done at Crown Jewelers, in the Westport Road Plaza...since you appear to live in the Highlands, that might be a little farther afield than you're looking, but they're a small, privately-owned jewelry store and do good work for a reasonable price.

I agree that it's a pretty simple repair. You should be able to go into any store with an in-house repair person and it's no big deal.

Leann, before you take your ring anywhere else, you may want to check with the jeweler that it came from. I know Shane Co. has free repairs on all their pieces for life. I would guess (hope!) that this is common practice.

Thanks for all the great suggestions. I'll let you know where I end up. I figured that the repair would be simple, but wasn't sure which shops would have an in-house repair person. I'd really prefer to have it done while I wait.

The shop where we purchased the ring is local. But the last time I took a ring there to be repaired, they really didn't fix it. It still rattled afterward. In addition, the lady at the front counter didn't inspire much confidence. After the repair, she told that she had been holding her breath while the ring was in the back being fixed. She said that she was concerned that they could have damaged or cracked the stone (it wasn't a diamond). I walked away with a really uneasy feeling about the whole thing.
