Meijer business practices

by Mike M » Tue Feb 17, 2009 7:06 am

I was just wondering if anyone else has encountered this while shopping at Meijer. I often go to Meijer due to the location being close to my home, and without fail every time I go there something I buy I'm overcharged for, the sale prices are never matched when the check out comes at this point I think I'll be shopping elsewhere..the clerk said it happens everyday, I considered contacting the BBB or the AG office, but I'm no longer as angry as I was on Sunday.

Mike I am right there with you- I almostr never shop at Meijer's due to political reasons, but when I do I am overcharged. I usually go thru the self check out and getting someone to clear up the mistake takes a long time.

Annemarie- which Kroger do you go to? I've never been offered a free item when overcharged. Ever.
the only store that I go to that does this is Whole Foods.

Let me preface my comments by saying that my wife works at Meijer Pharmacy.

Like any large chain, the local branch you visit has little control over what is in the pricing system. That is all controlled by the corporate offices in MI. If you see something being rung up by a cashier incorrectly, speak up immediately.they have the ability to re-enter it right then. If you are doing self-scan, call over the attendant and they can adjust it. If you dont notice it until after checkout then go to customer service, and they will give you a credit, or a gift card for the amount I believe.
The 'net is a waste of time, and that's exactly what's right about it.

I don't shop at Meijer often because there isn't one close to me, but I like to because they are headquartered in my home state and I have many family members that are employed by them (along with Post and Kellogg's--I buy a lot of their products too). Meijer is a MUCH larger company than it was when I was growing up, but in the past we have always gotten great response from their corporate offices.

annemarie m wrote:yes i have had this same problem with meijer's. one needs to watch the cashier ring up all items. i go straight to customer service and bring my receipt for being over charged. they always refund my money. now kroger's that a different story. i catch them too ringing up the wrong sale prices. but kroger has a store policy if it rings up higher than the price posted, they give you the item free. i can tell you, on one shopping spree at kroger's i got $17.00 worth of free groceries. they had frozen shrimp on sale for $9.99 and it rang up non sale price at $11.99 and got it free with other items that day that were rung up incorrectly. i wish meijer would implement the same policy. i can tell you kroger makes a once a week mistake on their pricing guarantee in favor of the customer. it's a matter of paying close attention and catching the mistake.

Kroger used to have a sign posted that they would give you any item free if the ring up price and shelf price differed. I've also gotten free items this way and from the Hubbards Lane Kroger (which is my favorite one to shop at anyway.) I never viewed the mistake as anything other than a data entry error or oversight. I think most stores are pretty aware of how closely shoppers monitor their purchases.

When I used to live in Jeffersonville we shopped at the Meijer and we almost always had something that was mispriced when we reviewed the receipt. Most of the time it would be one of the sale items in the weekly circular.I never had a problem with getting a refund from customer service though. I think it's a pretty common problem nowadays. Think about how many items a big store has in it's inventory. That's why we ALWAYS go over the receipt when we get home.
