Ant suggestions on donating my car?

by MichelleS » Fri Feb 13, 2009 11:22 am

I just bought a new old car to replace my old, old car.

I could probably get a little money for the old, old car, but I'd rather donate it. Do you know of a good organization that could use it?

It does run, but it needs a TON of love.

We donated an old Corolla to Volunteers of America a few years ago, and the process was fairly seamless, although we did have to drive it out somplace way out in the Southwest to do the deed. Now that might be a good opportunity to go to Mike Linnig's or Taco Tico. :)

A couple of points: They don't actually say otherwise, but if you are envisioning a nice homeless family inheriting your fixed-up car, put that idea aside. VOA actually gets rid of them in bulk at auto auctions, banks the money and forgets the cars. Your old jalopy will probably end up for sale in some mom'n'pop used car lot somewhere.

Still, the money, such as it is, goes to a good cause, and you get a fairly tightly restricted tax deduction.

I did the same thing donating my car to House of Ruth. Just like Robin said, they take the auto to either an auto auction or another car lot then send you a statement saying how much they received for the car. That statement to turn in with your taxes. You DO NOT get to write off the book value of the car, only the amount they received for the auto. I would have gotten 3 or 400 for my car (10 years old with excessively high miles) but HOR was able to trade it in for around $1300 which I can deduct. Win win win. Yeah!

I donated my last car to Kidney Cars. The process was easy-peasy. I signed up for it on the web, they sent a carrier truck out to pick up my tired old Subaru, and gave me a receipt for my taxes.

the VOA procedure was easy. You sign up online, fill out the title properly (they will walk you through it) and just leave the title, and unlocked car in the driveway. They will tow it, and send you a receipt via snail mail. It was a cinch!

It must be an uber-compact car if you're looking for ant suggestions.

You can also do the Car Talk/Public radio car donation program. The proceeds are used to support the public radio station(s) of your choice, and if you're a listener, it's tough going for NPR and it's affiliates right now. They really could use the money.

Tax deductible per the tax guidelines.

Wayside Christian Mission really need vehicles. More than likely they will actually use it. They do great work, and feed & house so many people in our community.

I've donated vehicles to VOA and Salvation Army. Yeah, they auction them off but it's a good cause, hassle free, and you get a tax deduction (although not as good as it used to be).
