A big wind is coming

by John Hagan » Tue Feb 10, 2009 5:06 pm

Not sure how many of you follow the weather, but tomorrow looks to be quite an adventure. The weather service is showing sustained winds at 30 to 35 mph with gusts at 55 to 60.These winds should start in the morning and last 24 hours. In addition a squall line is due to come across the area mid-day. Looking at the number of branches damaged by the ice I would expect to see power outages as well.
The tall one wants white toast, dry, with nothin' on it.
And the short one wants four whole fried chickens, and a Coke.

John, I've been following that as well. All we don't need is more branches down and more people w/o power. What has the Ville been doing to Mother Nature lately? She sure seems to have it out for us since Ike.

I'm really nervous about this storm, to be honest. We have lots of large trees in our neighborhood that I'm sure were weakened by the ice storm. This could spell trouble.

She's not gonna relent until we get a new football coach.

If that happens, Heaven help LG&E. There will be riots in the streets. We've all just about had it. I know I've had all I can handle this year, power outage-wise.

UPDATE FROM NOAA

NEAR TERM (THIS AFTERNOON AND TONIGHT)...

NO CHANGES TO THE FCST EXCEPT FOR THE NEW TORNADO WATCH FOR THE
ENTIRE CWA...FOR A NARROW LINE OF THIN CONVECTION THAT HAS WEAK
THERMODYNAMICS...BUT HIGH KINEMATICS. PAH IS ISSUING SVRS FOR THE
SRN EDGE OF THE FAST MOVING LINE...WITH EMBEDDED BOOKEND VORTICIES
WHICH COULD CAUSE ISOL QUICK TORNADO SPINUPS AS THE LINE MOVES
EAST. THERE IS A STRONG POTENTIAL FOR DAMAGING WINDS WITH TREE AND
PROPERTY DAMAGE ALONG WITH SCATTERED POWER OUTAGES...BUT LACK OF
INSTABILITY COULD LIMIT THE POTENTIAL FOR MUCH LIGHTNING...BUT EVEN
A LINE OF SHRA WILL HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO MIX DOWN 60+ MPH WINDS.

GRADIENT WINDS WILL CONTINUE WITH 25-35 MPH AND GUSTS TO 50+.
THESE WINDS WILL CONTINUE TO INCREASE AS THE FRONT APPROACHES AND BE
STRONGEST WITH AND AFTER A LINE OF THUNDERSTORMS THAT WILL MOVE INTO
THE WESTERN COUNTIES THROUGH NEXT COUPLE OF HOURS...THROUGH I-65
FROM 1PM-3PM EST AND THROUGH INTERSTATE 75 230PM-5PM EST.

THIS EVENING AND TONIGHT...

WINDS WILL REMAIN VERY STRONG BEHIND THE THIN SQUALL LINE AS DECENT
COLD AIR ADVECTION AND RESULTING SUBSIDENCE WILL MIX WINDS OF 25-40
MPH AND GUSTS OVER 50 MPH TO THE SURFACE INTO THIS EVENING. TIMING
OF THE HIGH WIND WARNING COVERS THIS WELL AND WILL CONTINUE THE
HIGHLIGHT THROUGH 10PM EST WEDNESDAY AS IT CURRENTLY EXISTS.

WINDS DECREASE QUICKLY AFTER 10PM EST BUT REMAIN IN THE 15-30 MPH
RANGE THROUGH THE OVERNIGHT HOURS.

And the short one wants four whole fried chickens, and a Coke.

There hasn't been much wind, at least not where I'm at. Anyone had strong winds, or has this storm passed us by, thus far?

The storm line came through Louisville without much hoo-hah around 1 p.m., but it was much worse, apparently, both a little north of us in the Bedford/Paoli/Seymour sections of Southern Indiana and also just a little south, around Elizabethtown. Boone County and Lexington was also purportedly about ready to take a pounding a while back. We may have dodged a bullet on this one.

(Be aware, though, that the sustained high winds and higher gusts are still on the agenda under clear skies for later this afternoon and early evening, so if it happens, there's still some chance of limbs, wires and trees coming down. But the severe squall line storms and tornado watch are over for Louisville, so in my non-expert eye, a little more than half the battle is won.

I would still be real cautious about walking or even driving in tree-lined city neighborhoods this afternoon.

It came thru our area about 2:30/3:00 and took out several tree limbs as well as knocking power out until just now.
