How about an L G & E Appreciation event

by Steve P » Thu Feb 05, 2009 3:38 pm

I'm sure we're not alone when we speak with gratitude about all the hard work performed by the men and women of L G & E (and their "mutual aid" partners) over the past week. Having dealt with two major disasters in the past 6 months they have, by most accounts, performed exceptionally well in the face of incredible adversity. That being said, does anyone agree with me that some display of the communities appreciation is in order ?

One thought we had was that given the resources on this forum, perhaps we could put together some kind of an LG&E "Appreciation Day" picnic late this spring or early summer. Since Becky and I don't really have the community "connections" that some of you enjoy all we can currently offer is our time and energy but we offer that freely for this or any idea/s that people come up with.

Anyone feel like "brainstorming" this with us ?

No thanks. LG&E will show us their appreciation by increasing our rates.

Not that I think it will change your mind...but my original thought was more in terms of showing appreciation to the guy who froze his a** off at 10pm reconnecting someones power as opposed to appreciation to the company that will (likely) raise your rates.

I'm with you Steve - an appreciation for the working "stiff," not the company.

I understand where you're coming from, Steve, and wonder if we could work around this issue by changing the concept to "Louisville Lineman" or something like that ...

Robin,

That is a very good idea...No wonder we pay you the big bucks. Louisville linemen...I love it.

Any thoughts on something we could do for these folks without breaking anyone's bank (far be it for me to spend other folks money) ? The concept of a picnic was just a "food related" thought meant to generate interest. Again, I have no "connections" with the movers and shakers in the community...I'm simply trying to generate interest (and will donate whatever time is necessary) in recognizing these hard working folks who are responsible for all of us to be able to sit in a warm residence and read by the light of Edison.

Steve, while I think its a pretty noble idea, I think a good majority of the hired lineman will be or are heading out of town as the problems are resolved. It might be good to find out how many are still out at Churchill Downs (that's where their base of operations have been)

FWIW, I talked to one of the crews from South Carolina and they said they were sleeping in semi trailers out there. Evidently LG&E put them up there. He said that was the first time they'd ever been called into a job and not put up in a hotel.

The only lineman I ran into (in my neighborhood, and the one's that approached me while I waited on the street in front of Z's fusion for a cab at midnight -alone...thank you Stephen D. you are a true gentleman :x ) were from Alabama.... I saw one LG&E truck during the whole week.

I feel like I should throw myself a party for surviving a week of chaos..... again... if the wind blows ever so slightly around here my friggin lights go out.

That actually almost made me spit orange juice across the room! I can relate, unfortunately. Every time the wind blows, our power goes out, and we get to spend a week freezing or sweating, and watching the folks DIRECTLY across the street enjoy their heat/AC. That's not frustrating at ALL!

Maybe we should throw a "OK Its Time To Get All The Lines Buried" party.

My neighbor is a gas man for LG&E and told me that they only have about a hundred or so electric linemen locally. Almost all of the work is subcontracted out to other utilities. It is a cost cutting move to not have a large labor force. However it doesn't seem to help the response time to repair outages when we are waiting for repair workers to come in from other states!!!

Just for the record, underground lines have their own set of problems........they tend to crack and get moisture easier than the overhead ones, their lifespan is less, and can we say "fried chipmonk"?
