Redesigned LEO hits the streets today

by Robin Garr » Wed Feb 04, 2009 5:19 pm

If you haven't picked up this week's LEO Weekly, I really hope you'll get out to a local shop that carries it and feast your eyes on a copy today. LEO has switched publishers and in the process redesigned the publication and shifted it to slick, magazine-style paper. In my opinion, it looks GREAT, and I'm not just saying that because the usual LouisvilleHotBytes.com restaurant review is in it. ;)

If you've seen it, or if you pick one up, please let us know what you think, and I'll pass comments along to the management if they don't see it here first.

Did you switch publishers or printers?

It wasn't "me," Amy. LouisvileHotBytes proudly provides dining content to LEO, but I'm not an employee and don't work there.

I do understand that they switched publishers, though, going from the Courier-Journal to a locally owned and operated printing house.

I didn't think it was "you" Mr. Garr. However, as I noticed that Pam Brooks was still listed as Publisher on the masthead I wasn't certain if that hadn't been updated or if you meant that the paper was now being printed at a different printing house other than the CJ.

I believe last week's editorial said the printing was being done in Shepherdsville. I presume that would have to be Publishers Press. They print (or at least used to print) Pizza Today magazine and a lot of big-name, 4-color, perfect-bound magazines, etc. (think Redbook, McCalls, etc.).

I got to read the Leo today. I am really impressed with the improvements and the changes.

Oh, got it, sorry about the misunderstanding, Amy. (PS, please don't call me "Mr," that's my father's name. ;) )

Yes, as restated, you're right. Pam Brooks still holds the office of publisher of LEO - no change there. The company that prints the newspaper changed. Sorry about the confusion.

Generally the company that prints the magazine is called the "printer".

Looks good for a first rollout. They need to work on the photos a bit. They have better resolution with the coated stock vs. the newsprint. When you go from 60 to 185 line screens it makes a big difference.

I liked the old Logo better, Julius Friedman did a great job with it and it at least had a little flair to it. Maybe I just liked Hammer time.

I don't completely love the new logo, but I think it's miles better than the old one.

It sure looks to me like this is the next big step in the already vastly-improved LEO that's been going on over the past number of months. The weekly picks section is nice. Logo is much improved--the previous one seemed pretty "high-school." One thing I've wondered---almost any alt-weekly I've ever seen has always been THE PLACE to go to for jobs, apartments, etc., and the LEO is sorely lacking with that content. Has Craig's List just supplanted that or nominal $ made on those ads?

Change is hard. I wasn't a big advocate when I heard the logo was going to change but I do like its new clean lines. I like that the newsprint doesn't come off on my fingers and the white paper makes it easier to read. The dullness of newsprint is gone. And, the crossword is still there! ( As long as I use a ball-point pen, it doesn't smear.)

That's a funny coincidence, Carla - I just sent Stephen a message that said "the only drawback is that you can't use a pencil for the crossword - but only punk-a$# b#@(es with no confidence use a pencil, anyway - I personally use a pen.)

I'm afraid I have to agree with Gary about the old logo. I just get the feeling the new logo is more about "LEO" than "Louisville Eccentric Observer." The old one definitely encapsulated eccentric, and I miss it dearly.

Everything else though is definitely top-notch. I was slightly dismayed at the new paper's inability to play nice with graphite, but I always use ink on the crosswords anyway. We should definitely start an ink-wielding crossword club Marsha.

Big sign of indecisiveness to do crosswords in pencil ... Has anybody cooked a NeNe recently ?
