Wood from tree

by JenS » Mon Feb 02, 2009 2:13 pm

I'm not sure what to do about all of the wood and mess that came from the loss of our huge white pine during the ice storm. We had a tree service who came to our door and offered to clean up the branches and debris for a much lower price than I had been quoted by another company. When the guy was trimming the branches that broke off, he realized that the tree was pretty much a total loss and quoted me another great price to take the whole thing down. He also said that he would stack everything neatly by the side of the road and people who sold firewood would come by with trailers and pick it up.

Currently, I have a huge pile (not nicely stacked) of wood from the trunk of our tree in the middle of the yard. What in the heck do I do with it? When do these illusive firewood collectors show up? Can I sell white pine wood to someone?

I know that we were more fortunate than a lot of people during this ice storm, but I am extremely stressed out by this tree. If anyone has any suggestions, I would love to hear them. I am also irritated with tree services in general right now; they seem to take advantage of difficult situations.

Thanks,
Jennifer

Jen,

Don't stress too much yet. I'd expect that Metro will announce another free tree limb pick-up date ( like they did after Hurricane Ike). So keep your eyes/ears open for it.

You will however have to move all tof the cut wood out to your curb to be picked up. (Personally, with as many tress out as we have, I wouldn't hold out for scavengers coming around and picking up your wood.)

Thanks for the encouragement Deb.

I probably should have included that I live in a little "city" off of Brownsboro Rd and I'm not sure if the Metro services extend to us. I guess I should call our city clerk and see if they have any plans for all of the wood.

As encouragement, we also live in a little city ( Springhurst) off Brownsboro. While we do not get Metro service for trash, we did get free pickup after the last big storm.

That's good to know. I'll make sure and listen for an announcement about limb pick-up. Some guys just came by and offered to grind out the stump for $80. I don't blame people for trying to find work, but I feel like I'm being nickle and dimed for this tree.

Can PINE be used as fire wood? I thought it had too much pitch/tar, etc. and would smoke rather than burn.

Announcement made. http://www.courier-journal.com/article/ ... 1/90202021

$80 is a good price for a medium sized stump.

Pine isn't a great choice for wood-burning fireplaces as the sap will build up creosote pretty rapidly, and so you're looking at a greater danger of chimney fires.

I doubt any firewood seller is going to take pine off your hands...your best bet is to have the city haul it off. In any case I wouldn't stress over it. The tree will go away one way or another...eventually. In the meantime you and thousands of other folks have a mess in your front yard. Nothing to get shook up about
