I really like Theinaman's (an original family member owns) on taylorsville rd , right behind the alternative school, past hurstbourne lane. I'm having a brain block, and can't remember the name.
As a directionally challenged person giving directions- go toward town past hurstbourne, it is a long unmarked driveway on right, before the antique store.
Also, Walitch (spelling is also a block today), on Hikes lane , not far from Al wataan.

Hope this helps.

Nurseries grow/sell trees and shrubs. Greenhouses grow/sell flowers. Often both tend to sell both. I dont want to cross the line on self promotion here, but would like to throw our name into the ring. We are a family run greenhouse(Anne,Mom,Dad and myself) out here in Spencer county that grows a wide variety of annuals, perennials, vegetable starts, herbs and hanging baskets. While we are not a real big operation(five greenhouses and outdoor production also) we have found a niche in that we produce a very high quality product. We also try to use the most environmentally responsible methods for growing including natural fertilizer and organic insect control. We sell at the Bardstown rd market,Beargrass market on Saturdays and at Phoenix Hill market on Tuesdays(also open seven days a week at the greenhouse ). Hope to add some more Louisville markets to our lineup this year. While we dont have our website up yet(you can find some info I think at the Bardstown rd site) feel free to PM me for our number or email.
Thanks, John
Robin if I am out of line here, feel free to zap my post. I will take no offense.

Colleen,

I can speak for John's flowers. I bought 5 large (6"?) Purple Wave petunias from them at Beargrass last year . They were beautiful plants and they did extremely well in my garden. I also thought their prices compared very favoarably with the good nurseries in town.

(And their tomotoes are the bomb! )

See, I'm having brain blockage issues as well. Yes, nurseries versus greenhouses. Uh.... Anyway.... Thanks y'all. I'll follow-up on both (John, I'll email ya).

John I wouldn't mind a drive out to Spencer Co for some really nice plants. I live in a condo and wish there was more offered in the way of hanging baskets or wall hangers. I'm tired of the usual petunia/geranium/impatience offerings. Maybe you have come up with something a little more interesting.

I can also say that their flowers are top notch! A great selection and very healthy plants. As my husband is shoveling snow I am getting ready to dig in the dirt.

Colleen,

Other favorite nurseries:

Plant Kingdom- on Westport Road by 210 Clover has beautiful plants/trees/shrubs. Knowlegeable staff and more specialty/hybrid stock.

Thienemans- I go to the one off Old Henry Road /Gene Snyder. I believe this is owned by another branch of the family. Very large- they grow for wholesale too. Great selection of bedding plants/ perennials/roses/herbs along with trees and shrubs.

Walltisch- Haven't been there in a long time due to the two above, but they used to have one of the nicest selections in town- particularly shrubs/perennials.

Deb and Nancy, Thanks so much for your kind words. I think I know a couple of people that will be on the top of the list when the first picking of tomatoes comes on.
And Carla, one of things we are doing this season is to have more product that works for small urban area. We are growing unique patio pots, wicker wall hangers and hanging baskets featuring varied foliage and textures to take it beyond just a nice blooming plant.
Just got in from deicing the greenhouse. It took about three hours to knock off around 1/2 to 3/4 inch of ice. If you dont get it off, the weight will bring down the house.

It's okay, John. It's right on point, and frankly, you've earned the privilege by your substantive regular participation here as a fellow crazed foodie. :)
