What should I do with my parents on Saturday the 31st?

by MichelleS » Mon Jan 26, 2009 12:50 pm

My dad and step mom will be in town Saturday on their way to Memphis. They've seen all the museums and such. The weather is too nasty to take them for a Crescent Hill or Bardstown Rd stroll. I already know where I will take them for foodstuffs, but how shall we pass our day?

It must be affordable but free is even better.

It must be accessible to someone in a power chair.

I don't want to leave Louisville, they will have already been in the car for 6 hours that day and they have to drive 8 more on Sunday

Any ideas?

Michelle, that's a tough one.

Have you checked louisville.com to see what's going on that day? Maybe there is some event..

The zoo is accessible and if it's clear of snow and not horribly cold, it's great to visit in the winter. Lots of animals are out that you rarely see moving in the heat of summer. Parts are indoors.

Bourbon tour at Jim Beam is accessible ( I think) but that's a drive. You could meet them there on their way into town- it's right off 65.

Anne Marie,
Good idea and I think Hadley Pottery does the same up until about noon. Michelle, what about Glassworks or Flame Run - would they be up for seeing the latest glass exhibits there? The Dinnerworks gala is at the Water Tower towards the end of this month, they may have the Dinnerworks dinnerware designs set up there which would be fun to see.

Michelle,
At the risk of sounding flip, I might suggest your parents may like to sit around the house and catch up on recent events in your respective lives. Just "visiting" can be as rewarding, perhaps more so, than "going and doing" and it costs nothing but your time and imagination. Of course, I enjoy my Mom's company.

Michelle, I would assume I am a member of your parent' generation, if not older, and I have to agree with Bill, " . . .your parents may like to sit around the house and catch up on recent events in your respective lives." If that won't work for you, how about renting a DVD that you all would like, and then you can discuss it afterwards.

I would agree with that if our apartment weren't such a dump. We don't have the seating or the room to entertain.

Louisville tips with West Virginia at noon that day, if dad is a basketball fan, access to Freedom Hall is never a problem or a nice comfortable atmosphere with a t.v.

You could settle in at one of our many local coffee shops. Most have comfy seating areas along with games, magazines etc. Or you could bring your own. We sometimes bring Jinga, Backgammon or Yahtzee. Think of it as an extension of your living room. Ray's Monkey House on Bardstown Rd. has some really nice seating areas to catch up & hang out with the family. You'd also be within a couple of doors of Cumberland Brews, Sweet & Savory, Za's Pizza etc.

Tagging onto Alan's comment. Za's is a good place to watch a game, but the three or so steps just inside the door and the five or so steps to get to the ladie's room could present issues.

I took my parents to the Ali Center this weekend and they were both very impressed...worth checking out if your parents have not yet been.
