Alterations...

by Dan Thomas » Fri Apr 27, 2007 11:13 am

I got a great buy on a Perry Ellis sportcoat when Dawahare's was going out of business. I bought it thinking I could get it altered(the sleeves are too long for me). It has just been hanging in the closet and now the opportunity has risen for me to wear it. Does anyone have a suggestion or recommendation of were to go to get something like this done? My wife can hem pants but is afraid she'll messs it up if she trys. Plus with the buttons and all, I think a professional is the way to go here. Also I have no idea how much a service like this would cost because most of the time I can find something of the rack that fits pretty good without alteration. Any suggestion would be most helpful. Thanx

Dan

Check out Miss Kim at Top City Cleaners at the corner of Preston Hwy. and Hess Ln. in Louisville. This woman's a whiz and affordable.

I've always had good luck with Highland Cleaners (go to the "home office" on Bardstown Road at Taylorsville). I don't think they are any higher in cost than others, but they have a fairly large staff and can usually get the work done for you within a few days at most.

I second Top City on Preston. She'll do alterations for you on the spot if you're in a hurry and it's very inexpensive.

Dan, I see you live in Indiana. There is a great place in Clarksville called the Silver Needle (I think) Its in the strip mall by the McD's on Eastern Blvd. One girl runs the place, it's very small, but she does excellent work! She did a bridesmaids dress for me in 3 days and I couldn't even see the stitching! Not bad on prices either.

Thanx for all your suggestions, Dee dee, I've just heard about the Silver Needle in Clarksville from a friend and will most likely end up there. I definately appreciate the recommendation.

We took a suit and a bridesmaid dress to The Silver Needle yesterday. The woman was very helpful, with a good eye for what needed to be done (we just tried on the clothes and she started making suggestions!), and everything's going to be done by Wednesday as well -- super quick! Prices weren't too horrible -- the suit is being taken in along the torso for $15 and the bridesmaid dress is being hemmed and taken in at the bust for $60. The $60 made me wince a little, but it's pretty much the same wherever you go for something like that. Stupid bridesmaid dresses...

There was a lot of traffic in the shop for the 20 minutes we were there as well -- a good sign.

Holly, the 60.00 will be well worth it! As I said in my other post, she does great work! My bridesmaid dress needed to be taken in 2 sizes, not to mention it was black silk! But it looked great!. I also took in some jeans and a skirt after that, all turned out nice. I think there must be a conspiracy with those bridesmaid dress. I've never had one first right off the rack! lol

I've got a couple of dresses I'd like fiddled with a bit and called the Silver Needle. I think generally I could understand where she is, but it wasn't easy to decipher her directions through the accent.

She's on Eastern Boulevard? Close to 65? I heard Hwy 131 somewhere in the directions but when I asked if she was on 131 she said no, on Eastern.

Any better directions from hwy 65?

The Silver Needle is located in the Triangle Center on the far end of Eastern Blvd close to Lewis and Clark Prkwy(old Hwy 131). Is is on the end of the strip mall furthest away from Mcdonalds, next to the library.
By the way... I just picked up my sportcoat today, and it looked and fit great. And she only charged me $20. I highly recommend the Silver Needle. :D

Holly, she does great work on jeans too. I had some done there and she even matched the gold/copper color thred that is use on jeans. They were boot cut and you couldn't even tell that anything had been done to them. She is a hidden little gem!

Wow!

She really is a gem. I picked up two dresses and a skirt today and couldn't be more pleased. When I came out of the dressing room to check them in the mirror, two women exclaimed over how beautiful the two dresses are.

The skirt was the bottom part of a dress I was really weary of and cut it off thinking I'd remake it myself. I'm glad I took it to her. It's fabulous. And the dresses are gorgeous. I've had them for nearly 20 years and never been able to give them up even though they've been sort of dated looking for so long. So I took them in, told her how I wanted the necklines and sleeves changed, she made a few scant chalk marks, had them ready three days later and wow, everything's even better than I'd hoped. If I bought them new today they'd cost a fortune.

I've got a whole closet of old clothes that should keep her busy for awhile.
