Work and hotbytes

by John Hagan » Thu Jan 22, 2009 4:01 pm

Just curious how most folks find the time to check in on the forum. After or during work or at lunch perhaps? I have the computer on in my office and when I come in from the greenhouses for the phone or something I check it out then. If Im not back out soon Anne will complain there is too much HotByting going on. :)

Those of us that work in commercial kitchens mostly cannot access the internet at work, unless we have a schmancy phone that we're also allowed to use during service (pretty rare combination of factors).

When I was at Humana, I could not access it at all- it was "restricted" as a "liquor-site" and entertainment due to the url.
That's true for many large corporations.

Since one of my jobs at work is the IT guy, and we're a fairly small office, I can check it pretty much at will. But since other people work in big corporations where it's blocked, or in restaurants where it's not really feasible to have a computer in the kitchen for internets, it tends to not be too hopping during the middle of the day.

John,

I know a number of us ( myself included) are job-searching right now, so I think that has something to do with the increase of day-time traffic: easuer acccess and more time....

I have it open all the time because I'm the janitor! :D

When I worked at the CJ, the Internet was just getting started, but I used to sneak peeks at my CompuServe forum when I wasn't busy.

This is easy for me to say since Mary and I are our own bosses at this little dot.com, and I know having a job is critical in times like these. But it's really tempting for me to say that I would not work for a firm that treated me with such little respect and trust that it "nanny-filtered" my Web use. Seems more reasonable to me to evaluate people on the basis of work product and not worry about how it gets done.

Robin,
I know it drove me nuts at Humana( not just this site, but there were work-related newspaper articles I couldn't pull up sometimes due to filters). But from a corporate standpoint, I totally understand. It's not really about the wasted time- the bigger reason they are put in is to stop inappropriate content ( which can result in lawsuits) and because all those people surfing/ streaming video consumes a huge amount of bandwidth/processing power which in-turn requires a bigger outlay in IT infrastructure.

That said, I'd be very happy to land a new job at a smaller company where filters are not needed. :D

The problem with that is you run the risk of working in a place like ours, where the only people that have internet access are the doc, because he's the boss, myself, because I'm nominally IT, and the MRI tech, who needs it for a connection to the radiologists office.

I used to let people use one of the spare systems that was not on our network use the internet in their spare time. That got stopped when someone decided they wanted to look at porn at work, and the word came down from the boss that was the first and only strike.

I'm lucky enough to work at a very small office where I have internet access and can check in with any website any time. I guess the next time I complain about my job/boss/office I should think about that!
