Wow, I'm going to make a special trip back to visit the clerk at the St. Matthews store that was so snide and condescending to me when I asked him about the lack of clearance sale prices during the holiday shopping season.

"If you're looking for closeout bargains, ma'am - you're in the wrong store. THIS store will NOT be closing. *sniff*"

I have a good buddy who's a flight attendant and very active in union matters with their union under Communications Workers of America, and she won't let any of her friends go into Circuit City because of their union-busting ways. She recommends Best Buy as a more legitimate alternative. Looks like what goes around has come around in this case.

We stopped going to CC for several reasons. One, uppity sales clerks, another, they like to bait and switch. We've been very satisfied with BB.

Here's a little background from TPM, Talking Points Memo, which strikes me as a better-than-average business blog:

I think what went around and came around was poor service, poor training, bad merchandising and an aggressive and smart competitor (Best Buy, with Wal-Mart also doing damage). The union thing might be viewed as bad karma for them, but other fundamental issues likely finished them off.

You are correct as usual, good sir. Let the record reflect, though, that I didn't suggest that the union thing was the solitary cause of their demise. I was just relating an anecdote about a friend. Better to say that their virulent attitude was likely reflected as overarching management policy in many of those other variables you mention.

Stopped by there this evening around 7pm. It was packed. I was looking for a very small TV, but the cheapest one was still $299. They are only doing 10% discounts on TVs right now.

And even with the 10% discount, that TV is still cheaper on amazon.com

Anyone looking for a deal isn't going to find it there. We stopped by the one by Jefferson Mall when they were closing that store. The gentleman we spoke to basically told us that they were the liquidation company was the same one that handled CompUSA. They're marking stuff up, then marking it down. The stuff probably IS cheaper on Amazon, with shipping, than it is at CC. They're still taking advantage of people, even as they close.

I read an article recently that mentioned the fact about mark ups before posting percentage discounts and also that the liquidation companies bring in inferior product to use as a loss leader to get you in the store.

Wife just went to Circuit City, and they are at 10-20% now, on CDs, DVDs, and games, which is all we ever went to Circuit City for, and even then they were 3rd or 4th options.

I learned of Circuit City's bankruptcy a few months ago, when i figured out CompUSA had went out of business. There was a bit of cross-linking regarding the liquidation sales being handled by the same company and how they try to make money in midst of closeouts and liquidation.

To echo the quote above, check out this link.

If you see any liquidation/closeout sales: do your research and make sure you're not getting raked on prices.

You do do a quick google search for "CompUSA liquidation scam" and find a number of articles regarding the topic.

I bought my son and daughter-in-law a big flat panel television for Christmas. I stopped by CC today. It now costs $300 more! Some clearance sale!
