Protesters

by Gayle DeM » Tue Jan 06, 2009 3:02 pm

So I just came back from my monthly lunch at Vincenzo's. Does anyone know what is being protested with the signs "Shame, Shame, Shame" on Sixth Street betwen Main and Market? I was driving so I couldn't pick out the details.

They've been all over downtown for years. It basically boils down to a union/non-union situation.

Thanks, Doogy. Guess that tells you how often I get downtown.

This is true. They are mostly temp workers looking to make a buck or two. I would elaborate more but I don't want to get into a battle between the pro and anti-union factions on this board.

was it a big yellow sign took three people to hold it up?

that sign was outside the UPS building on hurstbourne for about 2 months a couple years ago, then last year it was infront of the bank they built down from the UPS building for a couple months...

That's right by my office - I see them out here all the time. They also picketed the new bank across the street from UPS.

I was kind of amused when we had the Anon protesters out by the Scientology building there across from MidCity Mall. I've never actually seen anyone going in or out of there, and the building itself looks like it needs some repairs, so I'm not sure what they thought they were accomplishing.

I think they are typically protesting the use of non-union labor in jobs that are traditionally union positions.

I am looking to find a paid boycotting job. If someone is willing to pay me. I won't do anything.

A few years ago when I lived in Las Vegas, protesters were demonstrating outside of a grocery store to draw attention to the non-union low wages paid by the grocery. It turns out that the protesters were temps who MADE LESS PER HOUR than the lowest wage worker at the grocery. Also, when the protesters got thirsty from standing in the unbearable heat they'd break their own picket line to go inside the store and buy bottled water.

I'm from a union family, so this isn't some anti union rant, but I thought it was strange that this particular union paid less than the "unacceptable" wages they protested against and wouldn't provide those poor folks with water.

They also were the same guys that stood outside Calistoga for weeks while it was being constructed.

What kills me is how the Unions speak from one side of there face and spend from the other.

They hire Temps at say $12.00 per hr "The amount being paid to the temp service" to protest the low wages being paid to Non Union Workers on various jobs in the city, while the temps that they have hired are typically being paid 7 to 8 dollars per hr.

Why are the Unions not paying the protesters a prevailing wage for services, say $28.00 per hr or use union protesters? They are certainly not practicing what they preach.
