Best place for skywatching?

by Mandy R » Wed Dec 31, 2008 6:54 am

Okay, need some ideas for a good spot to do skywatching from. I really want to get out and watch the Quadrantids meteor shower before dawn on Saturday morning but I'm not sure if there would be any place even within the county that would work.

It looks like the weather maybe very good for viewing if a high pressure out of the north continues clearing skies Friday night through Saturday morn as predicted.

The further you're away from Louisville lights the better. I'd suggest a trek up to Huber's parking lot in Starlight, IN. Neat name, eh? They are far enough back from metro to minimize city lights.

The Louisville Astronomical Society's planetarium is in southern Indiana. Winds out of the northwest tend to prevent metro air pollution from distorting images. Here's a link to their Clear Sky Chart that can help in planning a couple of days out.

Good luck viewing!

Mandy, I've had several successful skywatching trips out KY-22.

Otter Creek Park is a great place for skywatching...Sadly, however, Friday Jan 1st is the last day that the park will be open...at least for the foreseeable future...

Hmm...sad about Otter Creek that's for sure, but I have never been to Long Run. Is there any particular place in the park that would be good?

Go down Flat Rock Road, it runs in between Shelbyville and Aiken Roads, and turn right into the park. The road bisects the park and ends up at Long Run Road. The higher elevations of the park would toward the Flat Rock Road side, the less populated side is toward Long Run.

It's not a big park, relatively speaking. You can check the whole thing out in a matter of 15 minutes.

Good Luck.
