Homeowner's Insurance

by Michelle R. » Tue Dec 16, 2008 1:11 pm

Can anyone recommend a good company?

Ours screwed us over, big time. We've been waiting since September to get our roof fixed. Today I found out that they will replace the back half of the roof, but not the front half, which is going to look like crap. 10 years as customers, never have we filed a single claim, and when we do, they screw us...I shouldn't be shocked, but I am. I'm going to speak to the head honcho today, and if I'm not satisfied, we're switching. Ridiculous.

Michelle,

Who do you have ? I have used Allstate for a couple of decades and have (unfortunately) had to call on them a couple of times. The last instance was in Sept...We filed a claim for the roof a full week after the storm (simply because we we away from home and didn't know the extent of the damage). We had someone come out from Acclaim Roofing the third week of Sept, they sent the estimate in the next week and we received the insurance check the following week. The new roof on the house by the 3rd week of October. Note this is not an endorsement for Allstate (I know plenty of people who hate 'em) just simply relating our recent experience.

Our neighbors had a similar problem to the one you describe...They had an adjuster from Kentucky Farm Bureau come out and (even though their damage was equal to ours) they were only reimbursed for replacing half the roof. Our neighbor is of the opinion that this was because KFB used local "home town" adjusters who actually came to the house, while other companies we're using out of town "Catastrophe" adjusters who in many instances didn't even visit the site but relied upon contractor estimates and photos. Please note that I do not know if this is true and I am certainly not knocking KFB...just relating what another person told me.

We've been happy with State Farm for auto and homeowners' insurance for many years. Our current agent is John Abernathy on Hurstbourne - whoa, in the suburbs!

Luckily we have not had many claims, but I've never had any problem with them, and Consumer Reports generally ranks them well against the competition.

Our adjuster is a nasty woman. She's been vastly unpleasant with me, in addition to the lovely gentleman who came out to examine our roof.

I've been with State Farm for all my homeowner's stuff for YEARS.......my agent is Richard White (went to high school with him). He's out off Lime Kiln.

We have our cars insured by State Farm, and they have never given us a second of trouble. I believe I'll look into using them. I'm still so angry with our current company right now that I could scream. :x

Michelle! There's your problem right there - you used "State Auto" for your farm and "State Farm" for your auto.

(I'm joking, but it struck me funny - all due respect to your dilemma, girl!)

LMAO! Never thought of it that way!

I would understand if we'd had a lot of claims, but we've never filed ONE in 10 years! The whole thing is ridiculous. Now we face the possibility of having a roof that is 2 different colors. That'll be a great marketing point when we sell our house. What a crock.

I've been using state farm for my auto and renters, and recently switched from renters to homeowners with them, and it's been no problem at all. The one time I've had to call they were quite helpful.

I just wonder how much Hell I'm going to have to raise. I just off the phone with the guy who inspected our roof, and he said the woman was nasty to him. At this point, I wonder if she even got on a ladder to look at it, or if she looked from the ground. My gut says she didn't. She and the roofer were supposed to have met at my house yesterday, but he informed me that when he arrived at the mutually agreed upon time, she had already left. That just seems shady to me.

I highly recommend Robert English w/ VanZandt , Emrich , Cary 456-2001 They can shop for the right coverage, and having had a couple of claims, they were very helpful & efficient. Good luck w/ the roof.

Another plug for State Farm. Have had them for 31 years covering everything that has needed coverage. In all that time we have had our share of claims but have never had a problem with them. They should have an agent close to you. Hope things get better for you.

My auto/renters insurance is with Cincinnati Insurance Company (Van Zandt, Emrich, and Carey is the agency) and I've been really pleased so far. However, I used to work in insurance before teaching. I worked for Douglas S. Gordon Insurance Services and would highly recommend it. Amy is in charge of personal lines and will do just about anything to make things right when handling claims. DSG services for many companies--Travelers, Indiana, Grange, Encompass, Hartford, Progressive, etc. (502)635-7066--ask for Amy.

We'll be switching to State Farm, I think. We have our cars insured through them, and they've been great. Wish we had switched to them sooner, it might have saved us all this trouble.

The whole thing just burns me up. Mainly, because I know we've paid them more than double what this roof would cost. Wonder if I can get away with paying half my bill, since I'm only halfway satisfied. I also wonder the legality of informing this company that I work in real estate, and will NOT be recommending them to anyone. Perhaps that will motivate them to make things right.

Michelle, you might also look into the procedure for filing a complaint with the state Insurance Commission ... just a thought!
