Best neighborhoods/locations for lights?

by Deb Hall » Mon Dec 15, 2008 9:57 pm

Okay folks, where are the best displays? We always drive around our neighborhood ( springhurst/White Blossom) and go past the house on Westport Road ( you know the one- with every inch covered with blow-ups...), but I'm looking to see some spectacular displays. I have a 4 year old who is majorly enchanted with decorations this year...anything involving trains would be an extra plus. :D

Thanks,
Deb

Not Louisville, but have you thought about driving over to the Horse Park just north of Lexington? The light displays there are sure to please a four-year-old.

Not Christmas lights (although they may have decorated this year) but on Plymouth off of Breckinridge lane, there is Plymouth Station. A sweet little old man and his wife have an elaborate train station set up with a real running train and they are very welcoming to guests that want to stop by. My boys love going there!

Also, off of Frankfort Avenue on one of the side streets across from the Masonic Home property (I want to say that it is just past the convenience store on Frankfort) there is a house that is awesome---loads of lights, a tunnel type thing over the driveway, Santa, etc.

Sorry about the lack of street names-- I have Christmas brain!! Can't remember anything these days!!

Becca,

My son would flip for the Plymouth train thing! Do you go in the evening, or during the day? And do you just show-up and ask them to see their train running?????

Thanks!

You just show up at the Plymouth Station. The times that I have gone were during the day but I am sure you could drive by at night. The guy and his wife are so very nice and seem genuinely happy to have visitors. The train tracks that he has set up are amazing and he even has a bench set out so that the kids can watch the trains. When we have come by, they usually come out and say hi, turn on the trains and then bring the kids some suckers. It is hard for the boys to leave and it really is very cool! Hope that you enjoy it!
Oh and you don't have to ask them to start the trains, usually they just come out and turn them on. The last time we went was about a month and a half ago--he turned on the trains but they were having a little bit of trouble with the cold weather. But still, running or not, it is a spectacular set up!

Yes the couple are very sweet and just love how much he truly loves trains. We walk by there a few times a year and we usually luck out and the husband is outside so we get a tour of the track and some new history each time...

Blackburn Avenue in Crescent Hill, towards the end of the road. These people actually decorate for all of the holidays. Check them out at Halloween, too.

We have a friend who lives in a subdivision off Taylorsville Road just east of Hikes Point. The subdivision does it up big. We were at their house last night and saw a virtually continuous stream of visitors driving through to look at the lights - pretty impressive. I believe the subdivision is called Windemere - it's at Lowe Road and Ashfield Lane.

Here's a link to map of location:

Jay,

Now I owe you double! :D We went on a trip to see lights and went to the neighborhood you sent directions to. I think Brian thought i was crazy for suggesting we drive that far out, but it really wasn't that far and it was VERY much worth it. Aiden loved the displays and all the lighted trees leading into the neighborhood. Thought it "looked like a fairy tale". Even the two teens were impressed.

Thanks to all for the suggestions-

Deb
