How do you keep track of your passwords?

by Bill R » Fri Nov 07, 2008 9:16 am

OK I think everyone can relate to this between home & work, I estimate I have about 21 passwords to keep track of. They are on different systems that prompt me to change them and random schedules. I can no longer keep up. I have tried various system to keep track, one password for silly things, one for secure important items ( investment accounts, hotbytes, payroll.) . These have been no help. How do you keep up?

ROBOFORM! My boss made me get it - changed my life! Stores all of your log-in and password information. Its only $29.95 and then an extra $9.95 if you want a 2nd license. They also have versions for USB or flash drives if you don't want to install it on a desktop or clien't computer. They also have a version for Palms.

I just have it on my work PC. It's in my toolbar of IE and Firefox.

Um, Roboform? Wow, and golly. That's just way too easy. Me? I scribble them on little post-it notes and keep em in a manila file folder in my desk file drawer. Sometimes I write a couple at a time on a whole sheet of paper. :P

most passwords don't need to be changed very often, sometimes at the workplace they do.

I just use a famliar word and last 4 of social (I know it's my social but never had a problem) or month and day of bday

so something like

calvin1201

if I have to change it I just go to the next number at the end 1202

You can also cap the first letter, some require this Calvin1201

since most software nowadays requires an alphanumeric component I simply start with the first couple of letters of what ever the site or software is.

so for here

LHB

then a numeric, 01 since I havent had to change it, each time you are required to change the password simply increase the number by 1

then to complete length requirements add

pass

so lhb01pass then lhb02pass, so on and so on...

No that isnt my password for here, but its the akin to the scheme I use.
