Doctor/Dentist Recommendations-Downtown/Up to date

by Ellen White » Mon Nov 03, 2008 12:18 pm

I have been dissatisfied with my internist for a while. I'm not sure he's up on all of the different treatment options. I have been on prescription medication for high cholesterol. I also take herbal remedies, which my doctor basically hasn't heard of. I would like to find a good doctor, maybe someone younger who is willing to aggressively treat with medications, but is also in the know about hearbal/alternative therapies. Also, my doctor is inconveniently located at Audubon Medical Plaza. I would love to find someone downtown, since I work downtown. However, I would consider lower Bardstown Road, Brownsboro Road, or St. Matthews.
Same exact thing for a dentist. Need someone who is good, up to date, and preferably located downtown.

Dentist recommendation Dr. Michael Mathis on Bardstown. I cant tell you the address but he is in the shopping center with the borders and the buckheads. as I said in the other dentist thread his office is behind the krispy kremes.
The 'net is a waste of time, and that's exactly what's right about it.

I have to express love and respect for my internist, Dr. Albert "Cap" Hoskins, who practices in the medical building at Baptist East. He's not a young guy - baby boomer like me - but he's intelligent, kind and gentle, absolutely keeps up on his research (and, for what it's worth, he's a serious wine lover like me, so talking about what good we've tasted lately does improve the overall spirit of doctors' visits). :)

I've also been told by other docs, although not by him - he's too modest to tell this - that a LOT of local doctors go to Cap as their personal physician because he is so well respected.

Lots of good docs out there, but these are the reasons why I'm delighted with mine.

I trained under Dr. Hoskins for a period of time. He is first class all the way and I doubt there is a better General Internist in the city. Between patients we would share wine tasting notes BTW. As I recall he was a cabernet/Bordoux man where as I would press Rhones, Italian wines, etc. as more affordable alternative for someone on a residence's salary.

I imagine he is tough to get in to see as a new patient. Internists who I respect include Dr. David Overly and Dr. Paul Loheide in the East End. One of my partners Dr. Tina Bradley is a fabulous young internist who has a great deal of respect and a very loyal patient base.

Physicians vary by their own philosophy towards medicine...it's imperative you have a doctor you trust and will spend time discussing your health issues. Don't go to a patient "mill" where it's 30 sec and out after a 2 hour wait. There are too many MDs who don't practice medicine in that way - in other words don't settle for less because you don't have too.

Let me know if I can help.

Well, I think he likes good-size reds and California in particular ... lot of California Cabernet in his cellar, and perhaps under your influence he now seems to be quite open to Syrah and quality Italians. ;)

My primary mission is to wean him off excessive dependence on Wine Spectator, but it's hard work, he keeps relapsing ...

As for getting into his practice, I'm not sure. He and a few others fairly recently left the group at Audubon and started a smaller practice in the Baptist East Medical Building (3900 Kresge Way). It couldn't hurt to give 'em a call.

Robin I gave him a pretty good bottle of burgundy for Christmas about 10 or 11 years ago...a Pommard I think. Anyway I got the distinct impression he wasn't impressed. Glad to hear he's still into it and expanding the pallette. Cap Hoskins is a truley special guy....I'm a fan if you can't tell.

I made an appointment with Dr. Jill Watson. She is in the same office with Dr. Hoskins. She was recommended by a couple of people. I called to see if I could just make an appointment for a consultation, but the nurse said they don't really do that. After speaking with the nurse, however, it seems like this doctor may be what I am looking for, so I'll give it a shot. I have high cholesterol and I want to treat it aggressively.

I have been dissatisfied with my internist for a while. I usually only go to the doctor once a year for a checkup. I had been on Zetia for high cholesterol, but before my appointment this year, I read that there was a new study that showed that Zetia did nothing to prevent heart attacks. So when I went to the doctor, I told him I had read this. He rolled his eyes, and gave me the impression that I shouldn't be reading stuff on my own. Also, I take stuff like red yeast rice and artichoke extract, which are "herbal" remedies for high cholesterol. When I first told him that I was taking this, maybe 2-3 years ago, he had never heard of red yeast rice, which is actually a fairly common herbal remedy for high cholesterol. So he took me off the Zetia, and he put me on generic Zocor. (He had prescribed Crestor, but the insurance company said no). I immediately gained 5 pounds and, after being on it for 3 months, blood tests revealed that my liver levels had slightly increased. So, he said, quit taking the medicine and come back in 3 months to re-test. Well, I am paranoid about having a heart attack, so I only waited about 1-1/2 months. Now, my cholesterol is 220. This is the first time it has been over 200 for a few years.

I just don't get why you would tell a patient who has a history of high cholesterol and has been on medication for at least 5 years to stop taking the medication and see what happens. What happens is your cholesterol goes through the roof!

I can tell, Mark. :)

And as I said in the initial post, I really think highly of the guy and would recommend him to anyone, assuming that he has a space in his patient list. He treats patients with respect and dignity, as fellow human beings with a mind and the ability to use it, and that's the ideal position for a doctor, in my opinion.

I could use some family Dr. recommendations in the Hikes Point area.

My family doctor is AWFUL. I've been incredibly unhappy with her for years. Her staff are rude, she's a flake, and I have to beg to get an appt. when I'm sick. "The Dr. can see you 3 days from now, at 3:15 pm, will that work?" In fact, my Dr. was directly responsible for me having to take an ambulance ride in August. I called to make an appt. because my chest was tight from bronchitis, and the antibiotics she had given me weren't really working. I got the "we can see you next week," spiel and hung up. Three hours later, I was being rushed to the ER, in an ambulance, because I had a bronchospasm. I turned purple, stopped breathing, and passed out cold on my front porch, while waiting for the ambulance. My poor hubby got the "Honey, I was rushed to the ER via ambulance" call while he was at lunch.

I'm thinking of reporting her to the PPO plan she is on, so no-one ends up dying from her indifference.

I don't want to get you sued, Michelle, but it would almost be worth inviting you to give us a hint at her name so others won't unknowingly end up in a place they would rather not be.

Dr. Albert "Cap" Hoskins, who Mark and I have been discussing, is in a practice with five doctors in the Baptist East medical building, 3900 Kresge Way, 896-6696, which is pretty close to Hikes Point ... you might be interested in giving the practice a call even if Hoskins isn't available. (My wife goes to Brenda Townes in that same practice and is also happy with her.)

I'm not sure how to go about that without her suing me if she catches wind. Funny how that works. I almost died, and I have to be afraid of getting sued for telling folks whom to avoid. The irony. What happened to "First, do no harm"?

I understand, Michelle. "First, protect yourself" is a common-sense rule to live by. It's a shame, though, that we can share information as consumers about banks, insurance companies, car dealers, stockbrokers (I've got a personal gripe against Hilliard-Lyons) and, of course, restaurants; but it's scary to name names when it comes to doctors. Or lawyers, I guess. :D

Anyway, I understand. It was silly of me to ask you to do that, and please don't worry about it.

I WANT to tell. I want to shout "stay away from Dr. so and so" from the rooftops! I just don't want to get sued, in the process.

I WILL say she is an osteopath.

I know I'm coming in on the end, but , after my experience my maxillofacial surgeon, he needs to be mentioned. Dr. Steven Cherry, right behind Austins, is fantastic! He pulled a wisdom tooth yesterday and today I think I'm gonna try to eat some Chinese. The soft stuff, still, but it is a testament to his handywork. Oh, did I mention he did it under local anesthesia for $115. And you can't find a nicer man.

My family dentist is Dr. Wagner on Brownsboro. They do a fantastic job! It sounds squirley, but I really feel like a member of thier family when I go in there. The only drawback is I don't get to talk to them as much as I like, with the instruments in my mouth and all!
