Center City $$$

by Michael Sell » Mon Oct 06, 2008 12:43 pm

Interesting that, although they have different motivation, I'm in agreement with the City Council Republicans about not providing $$$ for Cordish to develop "Center City." I can't imagine an extended 4th St. LIve "entertainment corridor" being anything except horrifying. Why not use those funds to offer grants for local businesses/restaurants to open a 2nd location (or move) downtown? Surely there must be a better and more organic (in the non-foodie way of the word) way to accomplish this.

i mentioned the project previously in this thread (almost 2 months ago):

Cordish continues to take over downtown, still city backed.

I put vegetables in your desserts, white chocolate with your fish and other nonsense stuff that you think shouldn't make sense, but coax the nonsense into something that makes complete sense in your mouth. Just open your mind, mouth and eat.

The story I heard Monday morning was on NPR's local news. The quote I heard from Hal Heiner was something to the effect of not wanting funds to go toward downtown development. The subject is still relevant because of the City Council vote this Thursday. Here's a CJ link.

This may be the worst possible unanticipated effect of merger: A council that includes anti-urban folks from the tract mansions like Heiner (R-Southeast Christian) and Downard (R-Chamber of Commerce), not to mention wackos like Hawkins (R-Rednecktopia) making decisions that could severely impact the urban center.

That said, I'm not so sure the Center City is such a great idea either. We need a little more imagination in City Hall to find a way to make downtown exciting and uniquely Louisville; not just another mall-in-the-city that could be anywhere.
