Gardens replacing front lawns?

by Robin Garr » Fri Sep 12, 2008 10:21 am

I think I may have simply been slow on the uptake about noticing this, but it appears to me that it is becoming increasingly trendy - at least in Crescent Hill, and maybe the Highlands too - for peeps to dig up their small front lawns and fill them full of garden plants, flowers and ivy instead. Looks pretty, reduces the need for grass-cutting, and somehow seems very "green." My wife even did it at our house while I wasn't paying attention.

Are you seeing this in your neighborhoods? I doubt that the idea has traction in subdivisions with large lots, but it sure seems to be coming on strong in the city, or at least the "blue zone." If anyone has links to articles discussing it as a trend, with extra credit for how-to stuff, I'd be eager to read them.

This is my dream!!

I am hoping to one day convert all the yard into an edible landscape.... having problems convincing the hubby of the plan however. I think he is having a secret affair with his favorite lawn mower and shudders at the thought of no grass. I have gained a lot of inspiration over the last couple of years from the Dervaes family out in Pasadena who converted their lawn during the water shortages in CA in the late 90s and now run a veggie and herb business out of their suburban lot.

Deb, thanks, but Mary has already done it. We were one of the Joneses who everybody is keeping up with on our block. :D

As for cuttings, Mary says "AIYEEE!! NO MORE FLOWERS!" :D She's running out of places to put them, but again, thanks.
