No more Baer's ... where to get quality buttons?

by Robin Garr » Fri Sep 12, 2008 10:13 am

My wife, Mary (a term I have never used in a restaurant review) doesn't sew much, but she is bereft over the abrupt closing of Baer's because it was her go-to place for buttons.

Can any of you who are into sewing help her out? Is there ANY other source of buttons in the metro even remotely comparable with Baer's for quality and price? She's an expert Web-surfer and knows about online sources, but she really likes to look at, pick up and feel buttons before she buys them.

Help!

Hancock Fabrics usually has a good supply, all carded. And...you are going to hate me....some of the larger Walmarts have a large sewing area and good button supply. For old fashioned buttons, I look in thrift stores and auctions. I have been known to buy a whole sewing box for the mother-of-pearl buttons in it. :D

No hate, Suzi, but we just don't do Walmart, sorry.

Where is Hancock Fabrics? I'll put Mary on it.

The one I have gone to is in Clarksville:
523 E Lewis & Clark Parkway

There are others in town:

5717 Preston Highway

5201 Elzie Road
Off Dixie Hwy Next to Target Sh Ctr

1959 S Hurstbourne Pkwy
Town Fair Center

I have not been there in quite a while, but they cater to folks who sew a lot, so the selection is probably good.

SORRY!! if I find any independents, I will let you know! She might also try (watch out, more chains coming!!) Ben Franklin Crafts, Michaels and Dees Crafts, they all have some sewing stuff. Have you gone into anaphalaxic shock yet?

Robin,
If Mary is a web shopper, she should try crafts4me.com. They have all kinds of buttons from vintage ones to buttons you might use for scrapbooking and you can buy them individually , inlots by colors or even grab bags of buttons. They are pretty reputable and I've used them several times in the last few years.

I never knew there were so many "themed" buttons available as well for clothing.

Jean, thanks! As dot.com owners, we DO the Web, but Mary really likes to look at and feel buttons before she buys. She said she does know of crafts4me, but thanks for telling us, all the same.

Hancock Fabrics is a really old-fashioned chain, sort of pre-the-type-of-chain some don't care for, if that makes sense. Mississippi based, very low-key, and not your typical mega-chain trying to capture the world (although as a one-time investor in HKF I often wished they had been a bit more aggressive!).

Don't alot of antique stores carry buttons? If so, that would be very "green" of you. Speaking from distant recollect here.
