Political talk at work

by Sonja W » Tue Sep 09, 2008 9:55 pm

Given that we are in the heat of a closely-contended election, what has been your recent experience of people talking politics at work? Leave out your own political response and preferences for this question. What are you hearing?

My own workplace is about 70% Republican and 30% Democrat. Sports are more often discussed than politics, probably because it's a more common ground for employees and because everyone senses that there are some pretty opinionated colleagues and it could escalate into a heated discussion. So our "get-along" company culture discourages divisiveness and encourages a polite distance. What is your experience?

Thankfully we have an iron clad, on the books rule about no political or religious discussions at work and, as a Captain, I enforce that rule strictly. When I first encountered that rule I thought that grown adults should, should be able to have a civil discourse on either of those subjects. After having to physically separate people (long ago) I have nipped such discussion in the bud. Our at work political views are expressed by our bumper stickers in the parking lot.

Well... I don't think it's a big secret that I work at LEO Weekly so the discussion of politics there is a constant and ongoing thing. Despite what many might think not every employee there is a Democrat. Our publisher is, in fact, a Republican. We love a good debate now and again but we respect our coworkers and keep it on a civil level . We struggle to see both sides of any issue in a fair light, give credit where credit is due and at the same time hold people responsible for their actions. But, and I admit I'm speaking as a democrat here, it's darn near impossible to see the upside to anything with the administration of the last 7+ years. The struggle restaurants alone are currently having with the economy is enough to give one pause.

At Cliffwood Organic Works, publisher of LouisvilleHotBytes.com, WineLoversPage.com and other creative ventures, we're an odd case ... as a digital corporation, we have about 20 employees, contractors and contributors around the world, but our streamlined business plan has only my wife and me in the office, and we tend to agree on politics. We talk about the election a lot, but we don't have much reason to fight. :)

My office is split pretty evenly. I'm respectful of people who don't agree with my political view, but there is a woman in my office who just takes insanity to another level entirely....she rants, raves, espouses political conspiracy theories, and cries. Oh, and if you dare disagree with her, God help you. She accused me of voting the way I do because "my daddy tells me to." Puhlease. I'm grown, and haven't lived at home in 12 years. My daddy can't tell me anything. :D

I try and stick to a strict no religion no politics talk, entertainment and sports primarily fill the cooler talk. trying to talk to people about religion is like trying to sway UK backers to root for UofL when they play each other.
