Seeking Info on East Oak/Logan Area

by Bill Veneman » Mon Aug 25, 2008 4:31 pm

Hey, I have a friend who is looking at a rehab (in progress) to rent in the E. Oak/Logan Street area. He want's my opinion on the house. I've been out online and have seen any real negatives there, but was hoping that some of my buds on here might shed some light on the neighborhood. Crime stats show that it's no more active that than other areas I'm more familiar with, so that's a plus.

Would appreciate any advice/counsil that you could offer.

Many thanks!

Bill, it does seem that a lot of traditional "avoid" urban areas in Louisville are gentrifying fast these days as the city gets attention and peeps start reacting to high fuel prices and the sameness of suburbia. I don't have direct knowledge of East Oak/Logan, but I'm thinking that Suzi and Richard might be able to give you some inside stuff.

You might want to edit the header (or let me do it) to make it more specific to the location.

We live nearby (Preston and Oak area) I am not sure if that is in Shelby Park, Smoketown, Germantown or Paristown, the lines are a bit murky, but it is a working class neighborhood with some really nice rehabs going on. The most common problem is limited off-street parking. With the openings of Smoketown BBQ, and the Save-A-Lot, we are seeing more possibilities of commercial/services in the "hood". You cannot beat the area for accessability to just about everywhere via I65, I64/71 and the closeness to downtown and the Highlands. Bus service is decent, my son and I use it a lot. Most of the area has strong neighborhood associations, it is a great way to get involved and meet your neighbors. I honestly do not believe the crime is any different than most areas of the USD, we have been here 15 years and have had just a few instances of property damage and no other problems. I have lived in Clarksville, the Southend and Portland, and chose this area when we bought a house. Several small businesses/offices have opened on Logan and Shelby in the last few years. If your friend is looking for urban living, it will be fine. :D
