Google Street View

by MarieP » Sat Jul 26, 2008 9:32 am

I am trying to figure out when all these photos were taken (Eclipse Bank looks just about finished with orange cones still on th sidewalk, and the new building over on Hubbards looks like it is in the early stages). But Cafe Lou Lou is there, and IT IS PACKED!!!!!

(Yeah, not sure yet on whether I like the whole idea of Google Street View...I can see how it could become a security hazard). If I had my Druthers (mmm I need a banana milkshake!), I would say they should do away with it to be on the safe side. As for those who were caught doing stupid things, well (I caught a guy jaywalking across Westport Road), well, as they say, "Then don't DO that!"

I think it's awfully cool, but then, they caught our house on a shady street when the shadows were falling dark and low, so everything is so dark that a potential burglar couldn't even figure out where the door is. :D

I get the impression that most of the photography was done over the past year or so.

Ok, call me a crazy foodie, but...thanks to this forum I figured out when at least some of the pictures were taken 8)

Th sign for Azalea is still up, but Varanese has a "Now Open" sign. So it must be somewhere between Aug. 17 and Aug. 22.

I wouldn't narrow it down to that small of a time frame.

I'm guessing that the photography spanned over a longer period of time, and then went live with the software after they compiled it all together.

I mean, that's a lot of 360 photos to shoot, even if it's not every street in town and is automated.

I mean, i suppose it could be done in a matter of days, but that does sound rather tedious.

Yeah, you are right, it does...They'd have to drive down all th streets, and there are some streets in Louisville not available in street view yet. I wonder how many gallons of gas it takes!

I will add this though:

The street view can actually be a very useful tool and be more than novelty.

When i was in Chicago in April we used street view to locate restaurants and other places we were walking to, took note of landmarks and whatnot along the way.

It's especially helpful for finding places that don't have any visable signage. (Charlie Trotters or Alinea for example)
Rather than walking up to door after door looking at street addresses.

I think they're doing it from mo-peds honestly.

If you pull the view downwards, you can see the street.
It's interesting to stare into the sun too. 8)

Interestingly, when I try to pull up the street view of my address, it shows a couple of my neighbors' houses.

I live so far out nobody has driven around to submit street level to Google. Maybe I need to be the person to do so.

They do it from a van, there's been shots on a couple of early street views where you can see it's reflection in shop windows.

Another thing Google street view is great for is checking out vacation properties. When I was renting a house in Sonoma county, CA, for this fall, I used street view to check out the neighborhoods around some top contenders. It's nice to discover that a "taste of paradise in wine country" is between a convenience store and a tire shop BEFORE you rent it.

And yes, based on the reflections, I think it's done by van.
