The Heart of St. Matthews Farmer's Market

by Russ Meredith » Tue Jul 22, 2008 11:22 pm

Hello everyone,
My name is Russ Meredith and I am the Manager of the St. Matthews Farmer's Market located at Beargrass Christian Church on Shelbyville Rd. I would like to thank Heather Yaron for giving me that extra push needed to get on the Louisville Hot Bytes page because I'm a little gun shy when it comes to posting on forums. I would also like to thank Robin Garr for allowing me to post up about the market as this is a great way for me to inform those in the community who are interested.

The Heart of St. Matthews Farmers Market is a community event that brings together Kentucky and Southern Indiana farmers with customers who are in search of the best locally grown produce, meats, and other products. We operate specifically for the benefit of the community and are not seeking to make a profit from our vendors. The church is gracious enough to let us use their property and they do not receive compensation for hosting the market. We will continue to provide the most enjoyable atmosphere for all our families and friends who venture to the market on Saturday mornings. I will be posting up about any special events that may be of interest to the local food community and if you all have any questions or suggestions, please feel free to send me a message. We hope to see you all at the market soon!

This Saturday, July 26th, Community Farm Alliance will be our featured non-profit organization and they will be talking with customers and vendors about their programs and how to get involved. One of their featured programs is the Stone Soup Community Kitchen, which is made possible by the donations from our vendors and others. This event is held on the last Saturday of the month at a predetermined location and this month it will be hosted by Jay's Restaurant on 18th and Muhammad Ali Blvd. Come out to the market and see what Community Farm Alliance is all about and then attend their Stone Soup event. Enjoy the evening by cooking local food with professional chefs and then eat with your friends and neighbors!

Thanks for the props Russ.

Good Job! and keep it comin'!

By the way, I think half of Louisville was at the Market last Saturday morning! We were Jumpin'!

I love it, I love seeing all the familiar faces, and friends, and greeting the folks who "finally" made it out to the market for the first time. As well as being able to feed them a delicious hand held breakfast!

See you Saturday for another fun market day!

H

Yes indeed, Thanks Russ,
We do several markets around town and find this to be the best "run" market. It is a really fun market to do. Thanks again, and keep up the good work...Anne and John

It sure seemed like it!!! It is a great place to go. Not to steal from Heather's excellent breakfast wrap (have you thought about serving the pastrami hash out there too?), but I greatly enjoy the French Toast with berries next door at the KenTex BBQ tent. The salmon sandwich with cream cheese and scrambled eggs is delicious too, and I enjoy the BBQ sandwich.

You guys who come to the market, don't forget to come across the street to Lou Lou for lunch and/or dessert on your way home, and say hi! We buy produce for specials over there pretty much every weekend.

And I am keeping an eye on the heirloom tomato suppliers for the BLT challenge next week!

St Matthews Farmers Market
Beargrass Christian Church
4100 Shelbyville Road
at Browns Lane
Saturdays, 8:00 AM to 12 Noon
May 17—September 27, 2008
http://www.beargrass.org/market/

Great market! I go there almost every Saturday and enjoy the the delicious breakfast wrap from the Meridian Cafe.
Wonderful local produce selection, fresh breads, Sunergos coffee and Gelato Gilberto!

If you park across Shelbyville Road in the lot where Sears used to be  (there is a Big Lots store and Heine Brothers coffee shop there now!) then Cafe Lou Lou is less than a block away (behind Chase Bank.)

Go in and "rap" with Marsha and enjoy one of the fantastic cakes.
Also, Cafe Lou Lou has a very good beer selection.

Mmmm....beer cake!

I keep meaning to drag my hubby out to take a look around, and buy some veggies that actually taste like SOMETHING. Perhaps we'll make it out this weekend.

I'm having a pretty easy time filling my produce needs by a weekly visit to the market. Eat 'em all up by each passing Saturday. I'm very privileged.

Heather, I came to the market with a hot cup of coffee from heine's and stopped by your booth in need of ice because it was 1200 degrees at 11am - THANK YOU!!! (I was the first employee at Meridian Cafe when it was Jeff's and I should have introduced myself - many apologies)

I've been eating heirlooms all week long with salt and pepper sprinkles and THANK GOD they are finally in season. Upstaged only by pairing them with the gorgeous peppers I got, too.

Heirloom tomatoes are my "deserted island food".

Oh yeah, with Kroger's cease of selling Jalapenos, consumers should check the selection at local markets if they're in need. I think the contamination is in from Mexico.

Hey Jackie,
Glad we could be of assistance. We will be there Saturday! If you make it out again stop by, and we can reminisce.

Saw Jeff at the Market about a month ago! Reminding us of exactly how the portabello has to be cooked! It was fun to see him!

Thanks Russ for posting information about the St. Matthews Farmer's Market! This is indeed a fantastic market! As I filled my shopping bags with several varieties of fresh vegetables and a couple of "special finds" this morning, I noted the attendance at 8:30 a.m. was larger than I have experienced in the past. Keep up the great work!!! Kudos to you and the Committee!
