Louisville Transit History

by Aaron M. Renn » Sat Jul 19, 2008 8:31 pm

I'll put in a bit of a plug for myself here. A guy sent me some great historical photos and a lot of stunning (to me) information about the history of transit in Louisville. It included a lot of info about electric elevated rail (interurban, I gather), a freight subway system downtown, and a seaplane base on the downtown riverfront. Here are the links if interested.

This one has more pictures in it

Louisville used to have an amazing transit system. It's a shame that the city, like most others, completely lost it other than bus service over the years.

Thanks for posting that, Aaron. The Interurban ran to Pewee Valley. I can't remember if it was part of the line that ran through Harrods Creek/Glenview or if that was a separate line. My grandfather worked for L&N for 53 years. His last assignment was as an engineer on the passenger run between Louisville and Lexington. When I was a child he would pick me up at the siding in Anchorage across from the Post Office and I would ride in the engine with him to Lexington where I would spend the weekend with my grandparents. Thanks for the fond memory.

Yes, thank you for posting this, Aaron! Very very interesting! I'm a local history buff, but I really didn't realize Louisville ever had an el train. It's kind of shocking.

In a related vein, I wonder if anyone has images of the trolley turnaround point in front of the endangered Colonial Gardens in the South end.

It's starting to be rather sickening how "urban renewal" (or kowtowing to the auto industry) in this city has cost us so many worthwhile infrastructural wonders over the years.

There is one on page 16 of the book A View from the Top, along with several other light-rail pictures.

Thanks. I need to get that book, especially with how I've been trying to make others aware of it and all.
