Need a preschool!

by Michele Cull » Thu Jul 03, 2008 12:00 pm

While waiting to see where we would fall in the JCPS redo of the clusters for 2009-2010, the slots for pre-school have been filled. (And they still don't know what cluster we fall into) Anyone have a recommendation? I'm sure it will be hard to get in anywhere at this late date, but I appreciate any suggestions...

You might want to check Coleridge Taylor Elementary. They have a tuition based Pre K program that is very good. It is a Montessori school. It is downtown which is inconvenient depending on where you live but well worth the drive. My son went there last year and did great. The school in general is very good also, once in Kindergarten it is free and one of the only two public Montessori schools in the system(which are free). You can find the school on the JCPS webstie. Don't know when someone will be there since it is summer but you'll just have to keep calling till you get someone. Or call JCPS and ask when someone will be there.

I highly recommend Chance- A small private school in Glenview (off Lime kiln and River Road). My daughter went there for 4yr- 5th grade and we loved it. Kind of Montessori based program, great teachers and a very small, warm environment.

I can second the Chance School vote. My oldest just "graduated" from 5th grade at Chance and we couldn't be more pleased. He started there in preschool. Class sizes are small and each class has a certified lead teacher and an assistant. The kids are respected and taught to be respectful. I could go on and on.

Chance School was great for our son. We enjoyed the small class size, personable staff and safe environment.

(Disclosure: Our son and AmyBK son are best buds) :D

I went to Prelude Preschool at 423 Washburn Ave., but that was 20 years ago. Last time I checked, some of the same people are involved.

At the risk of jumping on the bandwagon, I 'll throw some more support behind Chance. My son will be starting his third year there this fall and everyone we've dealt with has been great. While I can't compare them to other schools I will say that the staff and teachers all seem to be very attentive to each individual child. It's a little geographically undesirable for us but we love it just the same.

Wow! Keep in mind Chance has/had only about 150 students total...what does it say that 4 Foodies on this site highly recommend it? (I think the answer is small world, and good school).

The Temple and Highland Presbyterian Church Preschools are supposed to be good. My daughter went to The Temple, and my sister used to teach there, so I can vouch for it.

You've probably already decided on a school this year but let me just add two more...

1)The mixed ages (3-5) kindergarten room at Kennedy Montessori on the west end...Ms Jenny and Ms Mary are the teachers..it is the only class I can recommend at that school but it is so far beyond any other JCPS early childhood classroom, they are amazing, it is an amazing, diverse, truly Montessori classroom...

2) Waldorf School in Lyndon, their mixed ages kindergarten program (3-5) is excellent, it's what they do best and definitely worth looking into...

Thanks for all of the advice! We ended up with Waggener pre-school that is attached to the high school. The high school is an Early Childhood Ed. magnet. I'll look further into the suggested locations for K.
