Edible Legos: Lawsuit waiting to happen?

by Robin Garr » Fri Jun 20, 2008 6:06 pm

The foodies over on our FoodLovers Discussion Group on the WineLovers forum are having a time with this concept: Kellogg's and Lego have joined forces to market an almost nutritionally valueless froot snack in the shape of Lego blocks, the toy that parents always worry about their children swallowing. The only question any of us can come up with is, "What were they thinking?"

And no, this is not a joke or an urban legend. Here's the Kellogg's product page.

Any takers on how long they stay in the marketplace and when the first lawsuit will appear?

We just saw these in a large glass jar over at Schimpffs. We wondered about the wisdom of such candy as well. I will admit I almost bought some though.
The tall one wants white toast, dry, with nothin' on it.
And the short one wants four whole fried chickens, and a Coke.

There is a candy shop in Mall St. Matthews that carries Legos made of Smarties or Sweet Tarts-like hard candy. You really can build with them like real Legos. However, they are in very muted pastel colors that I've never seen on real Legos. My kids received some for Easter from their Aunt. Thank goodness they are old enough to know the difference so I don't worry about them popping plastic in their mouths.

I first saw these at Target about a year ago and was thinking the same thing. We teach our children not to put their toys in their mouths, and then a product like this shows up on the market. There is also frozen waffles (Eggo brand I think) that are Lego as well....
If you keep looking back, you will miss what's ahead....

I always felt the same way about children's vitamins that look like gummie bears. I can understand the reasoning behind it, so the kids will take them, but then the confusion comes in that it not candy, but it looks just like candy?? What's wrong with just good old Flintstone's???

wow.....what a crazy idea. i have a one year old boy and i would never buy him something like this. To begin with children put EVERYTHING in their mouths, and it is very hard to teach them not to do that. This is just an insane idea. A while back i was trying to give my son his medicine, it was grape flavored and i was saying to him," come on baby its candy. " yeah i know what was i thinking, and my husband said you dont want to do that it sets a bad precident. true. same thing with these toys. even though someone mentioned that some of them are a lighter color if you give those to a 1,2, or even 3 yr old, they may not really be able to tell the difference between the colors and just see hey look its CANDY! very crazy idea in my opinion.

i forgot to mention that to me.....this is not a snack at all.....im diabetic and in my family we try to make good choices. last thing i tell my kids is they can have this as a "snack". in our house snacks are yogurt, raisins, milk, any and all fruit, sugar free jello, goldfish. Stuff like this doesnt even make it into our house.

What will they think of next?...Perhaps we will see the return of Candy Necklaces, Bubblegum Cigars, or God Forbid, Candy Cigarettes! ...Come to think of it...I rather liked those Candy Necklaces back in the day :D ...

Oh My, I haven't thought about candy cig's in a long time. But I have to admit, when I was young, I was hanging out with the candy cig's thinking I was so cool! I would be horrified if my kids did that today! Then again, there is a lot of things I did that I would never even think about letting my kids do now.

From a parent of small children point -of-view- That 's an even worse idea than scented crayons (that come in Scents like bubblegum, licorice, etc). At least those are less likely to choke when a toddler eats them. Who invents/creates such a thing? Obviously someone who's never had a toddler...

Hey when i was in forecasting school in the Air Force back in 1975 we had a forecaster that was color blind...He used sented markers to highlight the weather map....such as....red for a warm front was cherry and blue for a cold front was blueberry. Areas of fog is yellow so that was lemon.
