Books

by Jessica Devine » Sun Jun 01, 2008 4:10 pm

On Wednesday, I was hired by JCPS to begin teaching kindergarten in August. I'm very excited to begin this new chapter of my life. However, I have nothing for my classroom. The most important part of my classroom is the library. If any of you have books that your kids have outgrown and you'd like me to take them off your hands, please let me know. Thanks!

I don't really have anything to donate, as I'm saving all of my personal collection for my future kids. However, I would highly recommend that you look into the Scholastic book clubs. I haven't had a classroom in some time, but I still order just enough books each month to collect bonus points, and I've really stocked my personal library through these clubs. Congrats on your new position!!

I would HIGHLY recommend "Half-price Books". Two locations; either on Hurstbourne between Bucca-di-peppo and Wal-mart (in a strip mall). Or on Westport Road in Springhurt across from Home Depot. Their kids department is wonderful. They have a lot of racks of $1 books, and I do believe that teachers get an extra percentage off. I could seriously spend a day in that store. Great place to get 'old' magazines to cut things out of for kids projects too. They sell the really old ones in stacks, the semi-old ones are 1/2 price. Check out their cards and stationery too.

Jessica why don't you supply us with some information on how to get them to you and maybe we could do a little Food Forum book drive here! I'd love to go out and buy a few books for your classroom for you, I think we all would. I'll be happy to share this info with the folks I work with as well.
I think we all can look back on our childhood and remember a favorite book that made a rich, positive impression on us that we could share.
And I agree that Half-Price Books is a good place to start.

Great idea, Carla! I have a brand new grill that needs to be loaded up and taken to a local park for a Hotbytes Forum Book Drive BBQ!

Wow! Thank you so much! I live in Germantown, but I would be more than happy to come to you or anyone else. I also love the idea of the BBQ!

Jessica, I was at Every things a 1.00 yesterday picking up Treasure Chest prizes for my kids and they had a large section of classroom supplies. Big charts on telling time, US maps, etc. Plus little reward certificates that were really cute. They also had a ton of books! Not the generic types you would think you find, but Disney, Winnie the Pooh, etc. and they were all hard back. Plus several sets on flash cards. I picked up a bunch of things to do with my son durning the summer before he starts kindergarden this fall. I was excited and so was he!

Also don't forget that the Library's annual book sale is coming up very soon, though I forget the dates. It may be this weekend actually. You could probably find a lot there if you get there early.

Love the Book Drive BBQ idea! There's the shelter at Cherokee across from Hogan's Fountain. Is there a place to grill at Waterfront Park?

I make a mean potato salad. A food forum potluck BBQ would be fun. Let's see what you guys can really do in the kitchen.

I saw a banner advertising the sale on my way to work yesterday. I definitely plan on going this weekend. Do members get to purchase during the preview? I guess I'm wondering if it's worth it for me to become a member in order to get first pick of the books. Also, does anyone know how much a membership costs?

I also love this idea. I can never make it to any of the get-togethers because I have such a weird work schedule these days. I just need to know at least a week and a half in advance so I can ask off work.

The annual Friends of the Library individual membership is only $10.
Everyone can join at any library branch or at the door of the book sale.
Members will get first pick and purchase of books on Friday night from 6:00 to 9:00 PM .
