Robert
cancer does suck
but i don't think that using the "sympathy card" addressed any of this issues that i brought up

and i doubt that all of the cancer cases in either hospital can be directly linked to second hand smoke
and i'd wager that only a small percentage of total cancer patients developed cancer as a result of second hand smoke exposure

were any pharmaceutical companies involved in the study?
i've recently heard of some issues with prescription smoking cessation products causing depression and suicide??

any thoughts?
any long term studies of these medications (10 + years)??

I agree with you Robert, Ive been unsuccessful in my big to quit the "evil demon" that is smoking. Even after seeing close relatives suffer though it.

I know that it is killing me, but I can't seem to stop....
But My point is, all of the bad health issues aside for myself, I'm sorry that now that I've been banished outdoors and that you have to walk though my stench...

But those of us who smoke have to go somewhere... The outside is the only option left and Really...

The air quality in our fair city is pretty bad anyway IMHO...

Whether you smoke or not!

All Italian restaurants have been non-smoking for more than a year now. Dutch restaurants are going non-smoking this summer.

Amsterdam passed a no smoking ban a few years ago. They forgot to write a provision for the 300 or so "smoking" coffee shops and had to rewrite the bill so as not to kill these licensed businesses.

Hmm ... I got this from a good buddy who flies to Amsterdam every week (she's a flight attendant). She certainly thinks SOMETHING is going non-smoking this summer. Bars, maybe?

I thought the ban was already in-place for everything BUT the coffee shops. This was Amsterdam proper not the Nederlands as a whole.

I'll ask Karen about it and report back.

The problem is that to qualify for the overnight layover you have to work an 11-hour flight in both directions, on your feet the whole time, with only about a one-hour nap. Also, it takes about 30 years to get the seniority that makes it possible to bid overseas flights ...

Only tangentially related, I once had a twelve hour layover at AMS. What a nightmare! Other than the art gallery there just isn't a whole lot to do after the first couple of hours! (yeah, yeah, I know, I should have done a short tour, but I thought I'd get really motivated to get some work done.)

Well, in fairness, federal regs and negotiated union rules require a fair rest period (ever had to take a flight delay because of "crew rest" when they came in late the night before?) Karen's standard AMS schedule arrives mid-morning and leaves after lunch the following day, which allows reasonable time for sight-seeing and dining out.

Talk about bad layovers, we had a nine-hour wait in Houston once, on a Continental flight to Peru. That's worse than AMS. And at one point when I was looking into judging wine in Georgia (the former Soviet Georgia, that is), I would have had a 12-hour layover in Moscow. Overnight. With no possibility of getting outside customs for a look at the city. :P

I wonder if she gets hassled in customs the same we amateurs do any time our flight arrives in the U.S. from the Netherlands.

I once tried to explain to a customs official in Cincinnati that smuggling marijuana into Kentucky was the equivalent of smuggling rosary beads into the Vatican. There's just not much point in it. His lack of a sense of humor almost led to a layover of another kind.

Flight crews do have to clear customs (in Memphis), just like civilian passengers, and are subject to random inspection, but I'm sure it doesn't hurt to do it weekly and develop a nodding acquaintance with the staff.

really? i really don't get your train of thought?

the world we live in is a dangerous one, if you're frightened of second hand smoke and think it is really a more serious threat to your health than the quality of air in this region, do not patronize establishments that allow smoking - that is very simple

why continually attempt to regulate and control every aspect of the lives of other people, use your own better judgment

You are absolutly right. I do not go to places that allow smoking and I think that alot of people are also following that rule.....If you are coming home to Kentucky from Indiana....might as well just cross the river to eat at a place with no smoking....Kentucky.....If you enjoy the smoke and second hand smoke....head to Indiana you can pay me now or pay me later.....
